A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi there,

I am new to this forum and have a question. I just bought a 1980 GS 550L. It is in very nice shape with only 7000 Kilometers on it. The only problem is that the mufflers are rusting out and I would like to replace them. My question is....what kind of replacements can I use? the headers are good, it's just the mufflers that need replacing. I would also like to take the least expencive route an I am a poor student. I appriciate any feedback and would love to get this bike into mint condition - she is a bute!!

Thanks

One place to look would be www.denniskirk.com and see what they have for your bike. (probably not much as far as a full system goes, but you may be able to cobble something together from their aftermarket mufflers.

You could try to get a set of used ones that have been cut off of a new bike in order to put on replacements. Harley shops may have a set (or ebay), I don't know how good it would look to have a pair of giant 6" diameter carbon fibre mufflers off of a sport bike stuck on the back of yours. You'll have to track down a welder or a pair of clamps to make the two different diameters fit if you can't cut the pipes off at a convenient diameter. You'll have to work on your carbs if you go the non-OEM route.

Good luck, Steve

That was me ... haven't adapted them yet, as I wound up riding the bike over the winter in the Toys For Tots parade, and then began acquiring/selling another bike (GS1000G) ... now I'm about to pick up a GS1100G. Haven't gotten to the 550L mod yet ... may just sell the bike "as-is." The existing exhaust has some surface rust, but is in good shape otherwise... It's tempting to do the conversion just for the sake of doing it, but I may not have the time before I get rid of the 550.

Regards,
