A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Faulty SH775

I installed a new stator and SH775 R/R on my '82 Katana. Stator output is excellent, but the SH775 will not put out any power. There are 0 volts coming from the unit itself. I checked all my connections and they are solid. The R/R was grounded directly to the battery and the mounting bolt was grounded to the frame. Here's what I did to test it after I charged my dead battery:
  • tested the stator to confirm resistance (or lack thereof) and output. Both checked out perfectly.
  • tested the stator output at the connectors between the stator harness and R/R harness. All good.
  • tested the stator output at the R/R connector. I used the Triumph-style connectors, and this tested good.
  • plugged all connectors into the R/R and checked for any voltage at the battery connections - 0 volts.
  • checked the output on the positive side of the R/R, directly at the R/R - 0 volts.
  • double and triple checked that everything was properly grounded (both the negative connection and the R/R body) and repeated the tests - 0 volts.
  • made up some new wires to connect directly to the R/R positive, negative and ground, bypassing the harness I made with the Triumph connectors - 0 volts.
So essentially I have power from the stator going into the R/R, but nothing coming out. I even checked to make sure I had the + and - sides on the R/R correct, which I did.

I then connected everything to the old stock R/R and all is well. The battery charges, voltage output does what it should. So call me frustrated and disappointed that the SH775 doesn't work. I ordered it used off eBay because these things "never" go bad, as I did for my previous GS650GL. And it is a genuine SH775.

Am I missing anything? No matter what I did I could not get any output from the R/R.

If you are sure the R/R(+) is connected to the Battery then you should see voltage there. Assuming you found a ground then you would verify that with a test light (Batter on one side, clip to your suspected ground).

If these pass and the voltages are as you say then the SH-775 is broke. Send it back to the seller.

Given your old R/R works I suspect that it is just a failed SH-775

Yes to all of the above. The same connections to the stock R/R function perfectly. I’m happy I decided to keep the old one for esthetic reasons, and that I left about 5” of wiring attached. Made it easy enough to reattach everything with new connectors. Disappointed, but stuff happens.

Sure you hooked it up properly? Bypassed the factory wiring?

Three stator wires directly into R/R?

+ and - straight to the battery (for a test anyway)?

Hi Ed,

Absolutely hooked up correctly. As per the pic you attached. Stator direct to RR, negative to battery, positive to the red harness wire. No joy.
