    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I recently got a 1980/81 (81 parts) GS 750L (Maybe LT? sorry I havent figured a whole lot out about it) for free! As you might imagine it needed some work so I've decided to make it a ratbike. I redid the whole wire harness and restored the gas tank (the previous owner left a quarter tank of gas gel up in there then rust over) so far. Now that those are done I wanted to hook the tank back up and see if i could get some compression testing on the engine done. HOWEVER, to avoid further unneccesary work and money, I was wondering what filters to lay between the tank and the carbs to catch that junk that still inevitably sticks around.

My first post here but looks to be a really nice forum.

I don't understand what you mean. You want to lay filters down to catch junk ???

Please rephrase.......

What else do you know of the bike ? Miles, previous work performed, etc... Got any pics ? Here's how to post some up using photobucket.

Most of the time, a filter installed between the gas tank and the carbs is trouble. The filter doesn't allow enough fuel flow if it has adequate filtering ability at all. Since the fuel system depends on gravity flow and vacuum to move the fuel, filters can starve the engine of fuel and it won't run well,
On that note, if you've removed the air box to install pod filters, you're going to have to re-jet the carbs in order for it have the correct mixture as well. When BassCliff gives you his welcome, he'll also include a number of shortcuts to helpful articles for our beloved GS bikes.

AAaahhh....I understand now......ratbike, Dan is right. The petcock has a filter, so an additional one is not needed. If you want to put one there temporarily while doing compression checks it won't hurt anything. The solution is to por-15 the tank and eliminate the problem of a rusty tank. And remove the petcock and clean up the filter.

Use the search function and look for anything you wonder about. There's years of info there.:)
 
Thanks for the welcome and tips guys. I did put in a new petcock so If i hear you right that new filter should be enough. I have not replaced the airbox or anything. I cleaned the tank with electrolysis (which worked like magic...look it up for any type of rust removal, just google electrolysis) then rinsed it with an acid wash. I was gonna seal it with por but decided to keep looking for a better tank and just make the new one totally sealed and make a quick switch at some point. After washing the acid out I dried the inside with a hairdryer and got some flash rust which was the whole worry in the first place. Sorry for any odd language I use, I've never done any mechanical work in my life until this bike and am learning everything on the fly. Im very greatful I found this site because I have no money (im a 21 year old college student haha) and this is a great place to find lots of fixes to problems without paying someone else to work on MY bike.
 
No problem. The typed word makes it difficult to say what you want sometimes.

If the original tank is in good shape, I'd por-15 it. It worked great for me. Finding a new tank can be a difficult and expensive. My tank looks it's age from the outside, but, is clean as can be inside, where it really counts.:)
 
Any filter designed for a motorcycle or a lawnmower will work fine, the ones for cars need pressure to push fuel through. Hook it to the tank, put it into a bucket and turn it to prime. If it gives a solid stream of fuel it is flowing enough.
