Final drive

Pete8092

Forum Newbie
I found a replacement final drive for a 83 GS850GD, I asked what the tooth count was and was told "33" I asked the count to be verified and again 33 was the count, can this be correct?

Are you talking about the wheel spline or the final drive that's bolted to the swingarm?

For the gear ratio (tooth count) of the final drive, I cant tell you from memory, but if you look on the microfische that still has the original description it wil include the numbers something like 11:33 (i just made that up) witch is the tooth count of the pinion and the final ring.
And I think there only was ever two different ratios, one being much more prominenet and the other a rarity (on some, GKs), and that memory is suspect also. But anyway, the ratio will be listed on microfische (now, if the parts supplier kept that in thier database, that is another situation).

Why don't you simply order from partzilla or similar? Used splines are risky unless you know it came from a 1980 850 or 1000G. The later splines got softer metal and wear poorly, and the (early) 1979 version was recalled.

Oh, and regarding the drive itself and the ratio, all drives are the same except for the 1100 version starting in 1983 which has a taller ratio. This tall ratio is not limited to the GK, the GL has it too.

Spline?
#14 in the rear wheel? That is most often called hub, some may call spline.
But they do not have different teeth count, are different-superceeded part numbers-designs over the years, but are all the same teeth count. So would not think anyone would talk about the teeth count for them.

Yah, I see your problem, seller says 33, when you pretty much know it should be 34 or 32.

Hum.... should they count the "teeth" or should they count the, ah, er, spaces between the teeth...ah, er, um..... no, that would not matter.

Maybe they can say what what model/year it came from. (Or maybe cant trust them if they cant count har har)

Other thing is, the final drive would have to be disassembled for someone to count the teeth on the gear ring, which is what might be thinking of when say "gear ratio".

Might the confusion be between what is called spline-hub ...or.... final drive gear ratio ... or ... final drive output spline....?

Oh, Hey!
I just counted teeth on a spare hub (#14 in rear wheel, joint assembly) : 33 (I counted 3 times to check self).

Which would be the same count as the output spline on the OUTSIDE of the final drive.

Maybe some confusion here between you asking us, and us responding.
And maybe similar confusion between you and the seller.
