    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

hey all just found the site looking for some info on the 82 gs550 i bought yesterday. little info on the bike it has been sitting for the last 5 years and 3 owners ive talked to both of the last two and neither could get it running it has less than 7k mi on the clock. when it was put in storage the oil and gas were both drained out. so far ive installed a new battery and added new oil, i know the left hand coil is bad so have to get a new one and will probably just replace both while im at it with new plugs and wires. i found the carb rebuild series want to dig into that some time this week. other problems it has been dropped on both sides so ill be in need of a choke holder thing (techincal i know) clutch lever mount and throttle pulley handle. something in the starter wiring is bad the starter works but only if jumped from battery. so i guess killswitch or starter button from one of the drops.
biggest question I have at the moment is will the low oil pressure light go out just turning the engine over tring to circulate the new oil and would there be a place to get new parts other than the stealership locally aka advance or the like?​

You need to start the engine in order to turn out the oil pressure light.

When you do the carbs, also change the large O-rings under the carb boots. They are sure to leak if you don't.

Spend as little cash on it as possible to get the engine running first. The sort out the cosmetics or you could waste a lot of time and money on this.

Welcome to GSR.

New coils are going to be surprizingly expensive. Maybe search for some on ebay. SOme other folks here more familiar with the 550s can tell you which other models they are common with, probably most all 1980 and after if connector is the same. THe plug wires come with the coils. Plug caps can and do go bad, so think about changing those. Actaully the plug caps are lots cheaper ($5 each) than coils and can go so bad that you think the coil is bad, but really its the caps.

May have to crank on starter for quite some time to get oil pressure light to go out. DOnt really know for sure. I do recall that starting bike after oil change and bike would start before oil light went out.

Coils- Ebay find some used coils from an RF900/Bandit/ early GSXR ,, have you tried to swap the coils ? you could also have a bad Igniter, seems to be alot of that lately. Most opt to replace with the Dyna ign, retrofit mechanical advance unit--depending on bike.
Carbs- don't even start working on them without an O ring kit.
www.cycleorings.com. DON'T rush the carb repair. soak each carb for at least 6-8 hours in berrymams carb cleaner, could also try the Yamaha carb cleaner.
Spend $3 and get 4 of the Glad disposible containers at the market to keep all the parts seperate and from getting lost. Check the garage section for detailed directions

Oh there is also a switch on the clutch lever-- saftey switch for starter !! must have the clutch in for the starter to work. Don't try to get the oil light off with the starter

Should aslo say that even if you could get the oil light to go out by cranking a long time, that would probably be more than you would want to run the starter anyway.
 
thanks for the help guys, i did get oil pressure eventually but am having other problems.

the name refers for the $50 i paid for the bike so as long as i keep it under $700 in parts and gear i should be fine. your right coils hurt a bit but since i need a whole ignition system pretty much its bout half the cost. my funds will increase as i sell off some left over parts from previous projects

atm im just going through as much of the bike as i can to see what all is wrong and if its worth it to rebuild. i normally work with cars but with gas prices i wanted to try a project that gets more than 10mpg on 93 octane.

other than ignition system the only other problem ive found is the gear selector return spring have to search about replacing it as it seems to be broken/missing though i can get the bike into all the gears ok.
 
alright get this i went to have a look at the return spring earlier, i popped the clutch cover off and squirrels nest fell out it was full of insulation/grease/acorns. cleaned all that out put a little wd40 on the pivoit and it clicks back great. i took a few pics of what fell out ill have to post them up later

the PO told me it had be stored outside for a bit he sure wasn't kidding
