A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

hi guys,

going to hopefully have the bike running again this weekend after it being in bits for the past several months. It has been up on a bench most of this time and the engine has not been turned over, apart from when I did so by hand doing the valve clearances a few months back.

Carbs have been stripped, cleaned and parts re-anodized and now look a million bucks :) Also a few other maintenance things and a bit of a tidy up.

My question is, After a standing period of this time, do I need to do anything special before I crank her over? i.e. put a few squirts of oil somewhere etc.? or will it be fine?

AS my only bike, needless to say I have serious withdrawls and just want to ride the bloody thing!

cheers :)

Always worth pulling the clutch cover & seperating the plates then sticking a little clean oil on them before putting the whole lot back together, the reason for this as ive just found out to my cost is that the plates can shear the friction material off if they are stuck, this is especially true of cheaper (non stock) plates

Having said that ive just fired up loads of bikes after a long lay up without problems but this time it cost me a new clutch so wont be doing that again as its only half an hours work to save a big bunch of cash

Thanks tone - i'll have a bit of a look at them before I turn it over :)

Another good idea is to pull the plugs and turn the engine over with the starter a couple of times. This will get the oil flowing to the important areas before you fire it up.

Thanks GSJim, will do that as well :) What does taking the plugs out do that tuirning it over with the kill switch on or removing the plug caps doesn't? Still learning here ;)

well if you pull the plugs yu can put a squirt some penetrating oil to kinda coat the dry cylinder walls. Also with the plugs out you can crank the motor with less compression to move some oil around internally, check the plugs for spark..things like that.
