Does the box have any effect on the tach? My tach is sometimes sluggish.

Not that I know of, No. I'm inclined to "guess" that you have a capacitor going bad inside the tach. There are two that are usually the culprit.
We had a long time GSR member in Sweden that cross referenced those capacitor specs to radio shack items to replace them with. I had to do that with my 1150. I believe the guys name was karl, but thats all I remember. It must be 8 years or more since I have seen him on the board.

For a moment, I thought that was another picture of Jethro in the kitchen again or Joe Nardy at the bar B Que grill. LMAO

No, your tach has effect on your tach...

LOTS of threads about this (do a search:p LMAO) but basicly Jim (pos) and I and a couple of other people have been lookin at this, and it is the board, the caps, and eventually, the main chip that start to burn out that cause the tach to freak out. I have a spare board and gauge pack that im going to send to Jim for him to look at, and see what that chip sees and then converts whatever signal to to make the tach work. Hopefully, at some point, we'll be able to find a modern, easily obtainable replacement chip, and if necessary, print new boards to install. The theory that ive seen most is that the capacitors, which are electrolytic, (basicly just batt acid soaked into cardboard and wraped up and sealed) dry out, and this starts the process of burning everything else out. Another thought is that the board is set up to look at a 12 or 12.5v signal at the coils, which if everything is working right, ISNT what its going to see, and the over current is whats doing the damage after time...Dunno for sure, but hopefully soon we'll have formulated a fix...

yeah,
battery sensor wire hooked to 12 volts takes care of that light..
hell,
iva bought 1150's with a piece of electrical tape over the battery light:-\\\
so whats up with this evil box that we now have a picture of???
i have put a wire tie through the connecters before..cant remember ever fixing the twilight zone lights this way.
its been about 50/50 on the 1150's ive owned...
half act stupid, other half didnt.
i think the similar model instrument bikes..1100ES/83-86 750E/700E/ES ect.. may have some of the same traits with the flashy flashy disco lights.
F---- it!!
cut it up and make a dragbike...

Gotta clean the contacts too..part of the problem is after its worked loose, it will corrode rather quickly, especially if it still has a partial connection there..

i pulled the connectors apart and looked inside..
hell i even spit on the prongy things then zip tied it togather.
i think this 1150 had a 20 bolt valve cover^o

Hrmmm You sure it wasnt a 16 bolt?? I dont recall the 1150 even having a valve cover honestly. Im not sure you know what you're talking about sir. Do you even OWN a GS??

oh wait,
you have never been to my storage area...
its a little bigger than my 10x20 shed:twistedevil:

Yup...I never had a problem after i did it. Like I said, I hadnt heard of that box going bad, knock on wood MINE doesnt, but it wouldnt suprise me if it did. Are they even still available??

================================================
Guys, had this same occasional headlight/tailight indicator lamp flickering on a 1100E for a couple years. Pretty much ignored it just like you all are mentioning.

Today lights came on and stayed on. Checked battery with meter while running. Am not getting any charging. Anyone else noticed if this has affected your charging?

Cleaned all connectors/grounds I could find in battery area/regulator area, and inside headlight shell. Ran separate ground to regulator. Still nothing.

Will also check the brakelight switch tomorrow.

If anybody else comes up with something, would you please chime in.

This surely must be something like a bad connector or failing ground don't you think?

======================================================

...bit of an update for anyone interested...

dash indicator lights -

- cleaning brakelight switch had no effect
- cleaning 6 pin connector (top one in photo) had no apparent effect

- wiggling wires right at black module DID effect flickering of brakelight indicator. DID NOT effect headlight indicator light(stays on). Cleaned the connectors (2).

Charging problem -

Took me over an hour to get rec/reg connector separated (2nd photo)

Corroded and "melted" together. I've apparently suffered the dreaded rec/reg failure. Using the pin-to-pin resistance test in the manual does not give the results they say you should get.

What is the current thinking on replacement of rec/reg? What's the correct way to go?

Awful peculiar that I suffer the "dash indicator lights" problem and apparent "rec/reg failure" at the same time. For the 1st time I'm feeling the "Suzuki electrical frustration" I have seen so many others mention.
Thanks for any advice on the rec/reg solution.

Dave

That RR connector dont look too bad. Look at what mine did..... Chop off that POS plastic connector and get some good individual connectors. Contact Duane and get a honda RR from him. I still think the flickering dash lights are caused by a bad module.
