    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Float height trouble

I am having trouble setting the float height. If I try to measure the float height at the place indicated in this picture, I have to bend the tab an extreme amount. I am using the float needle and valve that was in the carb. The float needle appears to be smooth and was most likely changed when the previous owner had the carbs done. I compared the needle and valve height with the needle in the valve with a new set I got in a rebuild kit. They are within .5 mm of each other so I think it has the correct needle in it. When I bend the tab down it causes the tab to hit the needle valve at a steep angle. Right now I have the float set at 22mm at the point indicated not to measure at. Anybody have an idea whats going on?

First make sure you have the float in the correct direction and not mounted upside down. Look at your diagram to confirm this.

You want to measure the height with the tab just resting on the little pin protruding from the float needle. You don't want to compress the pin. Most manual suggest that you hold the carbs with one hand, stand it on one end, then rotate the carb body until the floats drop and the float tab just rests on that pin.

I suggest you get the float height as close as you can with a calipers and then make final adjustments by measuring the actual fuel level in the bowl. I've found that even if I measure all 4 floats to the same height, the fuel level can still be different. The porosity of the float, age on the needle and seat..etc can effect the fuel level. Tiny movements of the float tab translate into large movements of the fuel level.

I did what Almarconi suggested. If I roll the carb to where the tab just touches the needle, then measure where instructed to measure I am at 22.4mm. I will do the other 3 the same way. I may try to set up a way to measure the fuel in the bowl after the carb is back together.

Before putting the carbs back on the bike, measure the fuel height in the bowls. I usually set the rack of carbs in a vise, level the rack(front to back and side to side), hook up a remote fuel tank and check the level. Sometimes you have to adjust the floats several times to get fuel levels the same in all the carbs. Its a tedious process but the result are well worth it.
