my bike is 77 gs750 when I install new seals I assume the tapered end goes in first is that correct?? any tricks to getting them in??

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

If it is the same style I am uset to seeing, the flat portion that seals against the inner fork tube faces up. When I changed mine, I used a large socket with an extension long enough to protrude out of the fork to seat the seal into the fork outer tube. If you do not have such a gadget, yo can also use a block of wood that is as close to the diameter of the seal to tap it into place. It is easier to do it this way instead of trying to work your way around the edge of the seal, as it tends to want to pop out of the opposite side when you are first getting it started. I would also ensure that there is not any loose debris from the possibility of corrosion building where the seal mates with the fork. Good luck.

I don't really see at flat portion. all I have is one side on the outer fork side that is slightly tapered and the other has a small shelf that goes out toward the outer fork, which side goes down??

I'm not familiar with the type of seal that you are describing. If you could post a picture, I might be able to better help you, but it sounds to me like you are on the right track with the tapered edge going in first. Would make sense to me so that it is easier to install.

Not sure what kind of seals you have The seal should have a spring, that side goes down into the fork leg first

Yeah, spring side should go down. Keep in mind, the old seals make great tapping tools if you saw them in half
