Fram oil filter gaskets inadequate?

I noticed a drop or two of oil would seep from the oil filter cover on the GS1100EX every time I parked the bike this summer. When I changed the oil last, I remember wondering if the gasket supplied with the Fram filter was too skinny to seal the gap. I went to change the oil/filter today, and the new gasket supplied by Fram is little thicker than the groove in the filter cover is deep. So, I ordered a Suzuki gasket from the dealer (approx $2.35 USD). I priced the Suzuki filter (approx $5.70 USD), then ordered one of those, too. Both parts together, just a couple of dollars more than the Fram part.

What is your experience with that Fram gasket? Is the Suzuki part considerably beefier? Any other advice?

I've been using Fram filters and gaskets on five different GS bikes since 1986. No problems of any kind with the gasket. Not a drop.

Nick

sounds like you may of pinched the gasket.

easy way not to pinch one is to lay it on flat a day or two befor you change the oil this will let it relax. almost any bend will pop up and get pinched.

next use a dab of silicone gasket maker in three or four spots. just enuff to hold the gasket in place on the cover. let it set up a bit.

this should keep you from getting a pinched spot.

to check and see if the cover is worped just lay it on a peace of glass window. if you have a big gap you will be able to see it.

no problem here either. Use a bit of silicone just as a safeguard

I don't think so. I examined the gasket upon removal. No pinch marks of any kind. The gasket is not soft and squishy, so I don't think I could have cinched the cover down flat with any significant pinching going on (I used my inch/pound torque wrench). I should have the new Suzuki part tomorrow and will post any differences that are apparent.

I keep on reusing the gasket until I think it is getting too flat. I use a smear of silicone to locate it and to make sure it seals.

I still have a stock of new gaskets, also have left over GS1100 ones from when both gaskets were supplied with filters (anyone remember back that far!!)

Al, see if there is a Mr. Filtre in Vancouver, they sell filters with gaskets for about 7 bucks. I haven't had a leak, I can't remember if the filter was a fram or purolator :?

I've used the Fram filter/gaskets for years.
The only time it leaked, my fault, I pinched the gasket.

I try to leave the gasket out for awhile, in the sun.
Get it flexible, then coat it with oil and install.

I have the 3 bolt cover on my 1000S, what a pain in the butt.
I need 3 hands to get in and around the 4>1 header and hold in against the spring, finger tight the oil filter cover and then snug it up.

I pay $5 (US) for the filter and gasket. CH100

I changed my oil today and used a fram ch6000.When i got finished changeing the oil I used some Gunk Engine Brite to clean it real good.Me and the guy i bought the bike from went on a 150 mile trip through the back roads and through a couple county lines.I checked it when we gased up and again in the next county over where we stoped and ate.No leaks :D .I checked it when I got home and still not a drop of oil.

For the record, the Fram filter part number recommended for my bike is the 6001. It comes with a gasket.

I fetched my new Suzuki gasket from the dealer today. I would estimate that the OEM gasket is at least 30% thicker than the Fram version. It appears to be constructed of a teeny bit softer material than the Fram gasket. When I place the OEM gasket in the filter cover groove, enough shows above the groove to convince me it'll squish down firmly enough to seal thoroughly. As I stated earlier in my earlier post, I could barely detect a new Fram gasket above the level of the groove.

I've rechecked the gasket I removed from service a few days ago. It remains the same diameter as the brand new Fram gasket I have on hand. A close examination shows absolutely minimal flattening along most of its length, but in a few places no flattening can be detected.

Although other GS models, or other examples of my 1100EX, may work well with the Fram gasket, I suspect that I'd continue to suffer problems occasionally. It shouldn't be any big trick to reuse the OEM gasket, especially since I usually only have to change oil/filter once each season!

The dealer is warning me away from any aftermarket oil filters (even Fram) saying they're unreliable, and that all those manufacturers have been sued successfully for damage to engines! I'm certain he's motivated as much by a better markup/need to sell Suzuki parts as any failing of the Fram element. No problem, regardless. The Suzuki filter is cheaper than buying the Fram, as long as I can reuse the OEM gasket once or twice.

I quit using Fram stuff after cutting open their filters(auto type canister) to inspect, and finding considerably less filter material than a comparable Wix brand filter, compare a Fram filter to a genuine Suzuki one, taking note of the number and depth of the filter folds= total filtering element available. I guess it wouldn't matter much if you change the filter more often though. It seems the more (any) company spends on advertising, the lower the quality of their product becomes to offset the advertising expense.

No I'm not using them now, I had bought a bunch on sale when I had 3 GSs that were being ridden constantly and just changed oil (dino) & filter at 1.5-2K mi. now I just have the 1 GS and get the Suzi filters and change at 2-3K
