Frame widening at home?

Hi all!

I test fitted a Bandit 1200 swingarm into my GS 550 MZ. I have noticed that it will be no go, because the rear peg/muffler rails of the frame is in the way. In the brake pedal side there is more probelm. What can I do? Can I widen the frame at home, or I have to find somebody. There is any way? Thanks

i would fab up a different bracket for the rear brake to clear the swing arm and if it is just the chain guard bracket that is fouling on the left side then just grind that bracket off and fab an alternative.

Does not look like it will help you but I used swingarm bolt spacers on the GS1100E that were different thicknesses in order to offset the swinger to allow the brake arm to clean. Most people go to a rear sets of an later model bike for foot peg with the brake cylinder mounted to the rear set.

The chain guard bracket is not the problem :( There is no enough room.... I dont want to change the brake, there is no enough room without it, so it is not good. :(

get a very long pole, heat up the peg mounts and bend them out, using the pole as a lever

what about a jack between the peg mounts? Work one against the other.

At some point the mounting ho;es will not be square with the frame but how much does he really need?

the trouble with that method is if one side "gives" before the other then only that side will bend outwards. thats ok if it is the side you want widened.
but, as you say it may be ok if you only have to move a few millimetres to get the clearance you need and it will be hardly noticeable.
with the pole and heat you can do one side at a time to get the required clearance

well I figure that if you were going to use a bar and even if you have heat that the jack would still work well in that you just crank it to where you want it. If one side if moving more than the other with the balanced forces on either side it should take very little to move it one way or the other to get back to center.

Ruler in one hand an a jack handle in the other. No brute force required(unless it strays).;)

Thank you all! I have to think it out, If I am capable of doing it :)

On the side note: what type of steel Suzuki used to make our frames? Wich standard? I am asking this, because I want to make a CAD model from my frame, but I don't know what type the frame should be... Any info on this?

It seems like GS 1000 made of STKM-13A mild steel. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:YdyveBE4L_8J:www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/suzu/suzuki_gs1000e%252078.htm+&cd=1&hl=hu&ct=clnk&gl=hu&client=firefox-a

I think this steel grade could be preatty standard to Suzuki, so there is a chance, that 550's use similar, or that type of mild steel frame.

Main frame members of 550's made of 1,12 inch sized tubes. That is 28,45 mm.
