    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Buying a 30 year old MC is always a crap shoot

My latest acquisition is thoroughly stuck with crusty old brake fluid. So, do I

1. Spray the inside with BrakeKleen? I've never had much luck with that

2. Soak it in brake fluid?

3. Pound it on the anvil to break it free?

Mind you, there is no rebuild kit available for this MC
 
I've had some luck with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol for old brake fluid. But usually it's rust (piston to bore) so some kind of rust remover?
 
If you can drop it into an ultrasonic cleaner for a time I would start with that, then PB blaster
 
The rear MC of my GPz was crusty like that.Gave it a good soaking of penetrating oil and air(around 100+ PSI) still didn't move it.A fairly quick heat with a propane torch and it came out slowly.

What is this "latest acquisition", for which no kit is available?

Maybe somebody else knows of a source or a decent replacement.

I have had some luck with this...
Also I have had to work the piston in/out -- I have had success pushing the piston IN slightly to begin the process.
By working it IN you break the stuck seal and can maybe ease the piston out.
Not having a re-build kit makes this all the more difficult -- it is likely the old seals will not be useful once the tear down is finished.

A complete M/C with 1 year warranty and even includes a rebuild kit for $25. The link is for the 16mm, which is for a dual disc bike. 14 is for single disc IIRC. I installed one of these on each of my GS's last year along with new brake lines and rebuilding the calipers and have been nothing but impressed.

Just a thought if you want to save some work...

It's the rear MC for my GPz

I've been searching for 4 years for one. It only fits 80-81 KZ 550 and 81 GPz


In my attempt to repair the original, I destroyed the seal between the MC body and the fitting for the reservoir.

No rebuild kits available, no it's not the same as an 82
