Friggin Fram Oil Filters

I had the same problem with the Fram filters. You couldn't get it to go on the center post because the rubber hole was too small. No more. I have been getting them at Car Quest recently because it's close by. Glad to hear they are Wix filters. :D

The posting talks about the FRAM PH6017A. I use the PH6018 in the GSXRW. I took a look at what I have on hand and they are made in the Philippines. I have no idea when I bought this last batch but they appear to have been made in 94.

It appears that this last time I bought all SGP filters for the GS. These are PN 16510-45040 and are made in Japan.

I am just starting to dig the garage out. The GSX is on the jack with no wheels. When I pull the old filters I will cut them up.

The GSX also hit the last stretch mark last fall and is getting all new chain and sprockets. It's going to be interesting to see how that front one wore. The GS with the 630 linkage will stretch the teeth bad.

I just use the Suzuki OEM filters. I get them at www.crotchrocket.com , where they are discounted about $2 off what a dealer would normally sell them for.

I think I pay about $3.25 apiece for them.

I thought I got away from the Frams by buying Car Quest. I did my filter today and the Car Quest filter I pulled out had a Fram Number on it and the Car Quest I put in had a different number on it. That's what I hate about parts chains. You have no clue as to what you are buying. I liked the mom and pop stores where you bought Spicer, Moog, TRW, Raybestos, Walker, Belden etc. A couple of months ago we lost our mom and pop parts store in our town. Couldn't compete with the big dogs. Now we only have Car Quest which is all crap parts. Much of what I bought there failed prematurely. I drive to the next town for NAPA if buying anything important.

So, I am doing some wrenching this weekend and came across this Fram filter on a friends bike. Was told that this was not the first time they ran into this sort of blowout on Frams. I have never saw anything like it. This is the standard GS1100E motor (very modified but a stock pump and gears). I took pictures of the marks on the filter the best I could.

So, while I have not had any problems with Fram, I am starting to rethink this.

I've been using Fram filters on my bike, and while I haven't had any problems at all with the filters, I have had problems with the replacement o-rings packaged with them - the last two filters I bought had the wrong replacement o-ring; they were not only the wrong shape, but they were also too large.

I will be opening the box and looking at the enclosed o-ring to make sure it's the right one on my future purchases.

Well, I was at Napa a while back and they stock WIX filters. They said roughly $6. Not sure, but at least I've an option now.

Steve, I happen to keep this kind of stuff on hand so I checked. You are RIGHT!!! This is a SGP filter!!! Here I blasted Fram. Sorry for the confusion.

I don't feel so bad about Fram again.....

Filters With the smaller seal just need a litttle oil on the seal and a good wack to get them on

Lynn, I'm talking MAJOR size difference. In the 1/8" range of smaller. I didn't Whack it with a hammer, but I did just what you mentioned. I always put oil on the seal anyway. I was hitting pretty hard with my hand. Not even budging.

Hey Gary, I was at Napa getting Plugs and asked them. They said their Wix are ~$6. Is that Right?

I think thats pretty common for Fram. As far a Fram goes, I think you're better off not to use any oil filter as opposed to using a Fram. At least if you dont have an oil filter, there isnt going to be element debris to clog the oil passages.

Boy, wait til THIS gets out.

Hey everybody, Earl said I DON'T need an oil filter.

WOO HOOO, I'm going to save money at each oil change now. :P  8)
Do I still need my carbs and airbox too? I hate taking them out and putting them back in. :P 8)

DM: You do not want to know what's floating around in a GS's engine if it's having clutch problems. I found part of a gear tooth, a teaspoon of aluminum shavings, and a whole pile of suzuki bond distributed within the oil pickup screen and oil filter. 8O There was some clutch friction plate debris kicking around also. The cool thing is that my engine lived through the ordeal!

Steve

Well now, thats not exactly what I said. :-) :-) As for the carbs and airbox, you dont need either and consequently installing a large door in the top of the gas tank makes it into a really nice beer cooler.

Earl :-)
