A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Had to push start my bike when left work...odd. But I figured "oh well" I'll jut get home and charge it. Halfway home I notice the dash lights dimming...then really dimming. Then te bile sputtered a little, then it died. I checked the battery, it was still connected, a couple of wires look burned on the reg/rec. I figure it died on me. I'm on the side of the road waiting for my ride. Anyone have any other possible conclusions? I've already put in an order for a new reg/rec.

Disconnect the melted R/R wires and ride it home if it is still holding a charge. ;)

Well, I'm home. The battery was too low to have gone anywhere had I thought of it. I pulled the headlight fuse and am trickle charging overnight. I still need together to work and back tomorrow!

I replaced both the stator and r/r when I got it. I assume the r/r is bad because it's more known to go...and the fried wires. I'd be real ****ed if I had to replace the stator again!

The wiring is the main GS charging system weakness. It would save a lot of people money and frustration if they realized this before burning up charging system parts.

Did you change those connectors ? Maybe its bad connections. Is it grounded straight to the battery ?
I did change the connectors, yes. I do not recall if I grounded it direct. It was a few years ago. When I get the new one, I'll ground it direct.

There is more to the wiring problems than just the ground. The stator should wire directly into the R/R, bypassing the factory wiring. The R/R needs a good solid ground. Resistance between the R/R output and fuse box needs to be checked and corrected as required. These details and more in the hundreds of different charging system thread in the archives.

I do know that wiring is a major concern. That's why I changed the connectors when I replaced it and replaced any suspicious wiring. I did notice that the wires actually coming from the r/r are cracked and brittle. So, maybe that is to be at fault. I'm working straight for a bit, so I'm going to have to live with it until I can poke at it.

OK, r/r showed up. Before I plugged it in, I decided to check a few things. The three wires that are scorched are the 3 wires coming from the stator :( I am only getting roughly 1-2volts AC from the stator. I assume this should be higher...significantly. I forgot to bring my shop manual, so I'm stuck searching the internet for answers. Is there a chance I don't need a new stator?

You should be seeing 60-70V AC.
Did you remove the scorched bits before running the AC tests? If not, it is required. If you did, you are now the proud owner of yet another toasted stator.
What kind of R/R did you get? Some are better than others, obviously.

I disconnected everything, and cut back the wires to get a better connection. I ordered a Ricks electronics r/r. I'm ordering a stator from Tucker rocky.
