Front Brake Stuck

Found a handy write up on installing the rebuild kit:

http://www.motosport.com/blog/how-to-rebuild-a-master-cylinder

So at least I know that I installed it correctly. I'll try to find either a vacuum pump or a tight hose I can fit on the bleeder screw, but I had a heck of time finding the too big hose I used to drain the brake fluid initially, and even that I had to buy in a 25' section.

Lowes or Home Depot should have 1/8" clear tubing sold by the foot too. Sometimes the pet stores charge too much or don't sell by the foot.

A mity-vac is a good investment for general vacuum needs and priming brake systems. I've used the cheap harbor freight version as well.

Another trick I've used to build pressure after bleeding is to put a clamp on the brake handle overnight. Not sure why it works, perhaps the bubbles make their way back into the reservoir overnight and pop...

thanks for the lowes/home depot suggestion, i may try those first since i drive by them on the way to the pet store.

So I tried the rubber hose method, but I didn't have the lung capacity. Ended up buying a Mityvac Brake Bleeding Kit and that seems to have done gotten me past that hurdle.

I was able to fill the lines and bleed some air out, but I can't seem to get the brake to stiffen up completely, and when I do get it close, squeezing the lever a few times makes it lose most of it's pressure. If I let it sit for a few minutes it stiffens back up on its own. Right now I've got the lever tied down and I'll leave it overnight to see if that does anything.

Pump up the lever after doing a few manual bleeds like you would a car and watch the tubing for no more air bubbles. Then pump the hell out of the lever and get it as stiff as possible. Hold the lever to the bars and wrap it in place with a bungee. Next morning youll have great brake levers again. For the rear, do the same thing and wedge a hammer handle between the frame and pedal shaft to hold the brakes on.

On everyone's advice I wrapped the front brake lever tight last night and this morning the brake feels awesome. Maybe even too awesome? The brake is working, it has awesome stopping power, and releases when I let off the brake, but I think the pads are still hitting the rotor a bit while the brake is released because its making a short squeaking noise occasionally as I roll it. Of course it's raining today so I can't do more than wheel it back forth about 5 feet in the garage so I can't do much testing, but I really think that brake pad is still rubbing...

Get some pad anti squeak stuff from any auto Parts place and coat the backs of the pads. That or get some from the local guy that's his own car mechanic..they usually never use the pouch that comes when you buy new pads.

Thanks Chuck, I'll track some down. This is very exciting, I only put 90 miles on this bike before the front brake went.

Took it out for a spin yesterday afternoon. The squeak went away on it's own. The front brake seems to be working great and the brake light comes on and off every time. No leaks anywhere. I think I can call this project a success . Thanks everybody for all your help!
