    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Front Master Cylinder and Tire Question

Hey people,

Wondering if it matters whether I use an OEM replacement for the front master cylinder of my bike in the signature or can I buy a new aftermarket one? I want one with that rectangular metal cased reservoir. The PO dropped the bike and the plastic one leaks, so I figure if i drop it again, perhaps this may not be as prone to leaking.

Any brands or products you'd recommend over a $200+ dollar ones I keep seeing. I see plenty in the 20-50 dollar range that seem just as good. What gives?

Also, I seem to be having trouble finding a place to buy a rear tire!? The front I can find easily but I havent been able to find a site that stocks an OEM replacement size for the rear. Is it even necessary to match the specs completely? Or will the rim size match fine?
 
Any master with a 14mm piston will work. There are lots of good options on ebay. If you plan to use a stock type mirror make sure the master you select has a threaded lug with the proper thread size and configuration to match. Also, make sure the master has a brake switch built in. You may have to adapt the wires from your old master to the new but that shouldn't be difficult.

Regarding a rear tire, you don't need the stock size, just a size that matches to your wheel. If your bike has a 17" rear then a 120/90-17 tire would be a good choice. American Motorcycle Tire is my favorite place to order tires but there are other good choices as well.

A master cylinder is a MC. The bore size matters more than what bike it came from. I would consider a rebuild mandatory for any used MC you buy.

There are plenty of cheap new MCs on ebay. I was doubtful of the quality. Also there likely won't be any rebuild kits available if/when you need one. But if the MC is super cheap, it's probably cheaper to buy a new one than rebuild it. Of course, a rebuild on a new MC should be many years away.
