    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

front sprocket nut

Changing the front/rear sprocket & chain on my '82 GS750TZ. So I don't have to remove the cover before I pick up the parts does anyone know what size socket I need to remove the nut on the front sprocket.
I can't think pitalls, does anyone know of any to be ready for....Mike
 
If you don't have the right size socket a big crescent usually gets the job done.

I had to admit it, but that's what I use too. :wink:
 
Mines a 1 1/4 socket 1/2 drive

Tip, leave the chain on and the bike in gear just in case the nut is on to tight. This way you can sit on the bike and use the rear brake to keep the sprocket from turning when you are cranking on the nut.

I will resort to an adjustable but as a last resort, I hate 'em, didn't say I wouldn't use them though, just as a last resort.
Thanks for the size Jake, I was intendnig to leave it all toether so I could loosen the nut, nothings worse than trying to move a bolt/nut and the piece spinning around....Mike
 
I think it's actually a 32mm. Which is very close to what Jake said, but our bikes are all metric, so if you're buying a socket, might as well get the metric one.
 
inch and a quarter fit my 1150. I dont think I could have used an adjustable without losing lots of knuckle skin and blood

I fugured it would be metric, 1 1/4" is so close to 32 mm (1.259843) that it may as well be the same, thanks all....Mike
 
You may find the sprocket nut loose! I have found that a few times, with only the locking unit keeping it from spinning off! 8O
 
Loose? Crescent wrench? Wow... I wish mine had been that way. I'm still trying to figure out how to break mine loose. Last night I was standing on the rear brake, leaning on the back of the bike, and pulling on the double cheater bar with all my might and STILL couldn't get it to break free. This thing isn't left hand threaded is it?
 
It is 32mm (at least on my 1100). Mine wasn't loose at all - in fact I can't get the bloody thing off. This weekend I'll be picking up an electric impact wrench especially for this task.
