    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Front Sprocket Question

I recently changed my chain and sprockets (630) and have noticed increased drivetrain noise since. This afternoon I pulled the front sprocket and noticed that there is a lot of play in the sprocket from side to side on the output shaft - between 1/8 and 1/4". I also noticed that my sprocket nut does not tighten all the way to the sprocket even with the lock washer on. Is this normal? As far as I can tell the front sprocket is the correct part - sunstar #609.

i just put a sunstar on myself. i don't think it should move at all side-to-side. could be that your male/drive gear is kaput. others on this site know more than me..........but, your front/drive gear should fit snuggly without wiggle (or jiggle) even if you have to use washers or something else (i took the goose-neck washers and bolts off an old bicylcle of my youngins' and tightened' a front/drive sprocket on a gs750 a couple years ago). again, the answer is here; i just may not have it on a fri. night (i like to have a little taste of.......well, you know....... on a fri. nite there ain't nothin' else to do in the mountains. we're in the middle of a thunderstorm right now...... cain't even finish my pathetic attempt at a paint job. good luck
 
I double checked the sunstar number with Dennis Kirk's number (where I got it) and everything matches. I noticed that the sprocket nut has tabs on the face of the nut that prevent it from screwing completely through the threaded part of the shaft. I found one other thread in which someone had a nut that sounded alot like mine. Is this typical?
 
I happened to check mine the ther day and it too had about an 1/8 inch of play. I re torqued it to 80 ft/lb (as specified in the manual if I recall correctly) and it tightend right up.

It should not be loose and an aftermarket nut is available that is not supposed to back off like the stock one does. Scroll down the page here and you will see it.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking that this nut might be some sort of stop nut that doesn't use nylon, something that I haven't seen before. I actually have one of the APE nuts lying around which I was going to use for the clutch. I think I'll give it a try.

One other possibility is that I installed the sprocket in the wrong orientation.
