    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Fuel Additives and Fuel Filters.. The good, the bad..

I am with Ron on this one. I have inspected the screen filter on both my GS tank petcocks and both are intact. Also, both tanks are rust free. Yet still, somehow????? particles manage to get into my carbs. I put an inline fuel filter in for the first time in my motorcycle history and have not had an issue since. Maybe I installed mine right? Different people on here are having different experiences and some of the guys who say poo to the filters know their stuff so take you own path on this one. I personally highly recommend them at this time and will be installing one on all my motorcycles from here on out until I have an experience that makes me think differently.

Only tip on that, don't use those little lawn tractor fuel filters that some bike shops actually sell to use on bikes. I had one on my this bike when I got it and it was not capable of sufficient fuel flow for my hungry liter engine.
 
Thanks for all the great opinions and again, education. You were all about equally divided regarding adding a fuel filter or not... And yes it helps me a lot. I'll do a little more inspecting now that I know about the filters my bike is supposed to have.

If I decided to try and install one in that short, cramped space. It sounds important to get the right filter. Can anybody suggest which one??? Or what to look for in a good unit??

Greg, to install the filter simply remove are much hose as the filter is going to replace. It will fit right in. No issue at all.

There are a load of good filters but my preference is to use a sealed disposable filter. The units that come apart and use replacement elements can, well, come apart. It's just one more possible point of failure so I eliminate that by using a sealed filter. I like the Emgo sealed inline filters like this one:

They come in a lot of sizes and shapes. I find that this one (made for a Goldwing) fits nicely right inline under the tank and is large enough to provide a lot of filtration before it will need replacement. I have run it for 5 months now without an issue.
 
I like the FRAM automotive filters... they are metal... won't melt. Kragen has a nice selection of sizes.

Both sides of the issue are very enlightening to me.

I think I'm going to try one, and yes, I'll research it and get the right one. I saw the Emgo one at a Kaw. shop... and I saw a metal one at a friends garage that he bought at a Harley shop. Sounds like if I get the right one and install it carefully - that it won't impede fuel flow, won't melt or come apart and will help keep bad stuff out of those touchy carbs.

All great info to keep these fun old bikes, reliable...... Greg
 
another thing to think about, is don't ever fill up at a station that is having fuel dumped at the time or any time recently. especially important at older stations as all the crud that has accumulated gets stirred up when they add fuel.

generally newer stations have cleaner tanks , so this is less of a factor.

Greg, if you go with the one I pictured or any like it you need not worry about melting. They are made to take the heat. I've never seen one melt, but I have never used the wrong filter for my application either.
 
I have used a small plastic inline filter on both of my GS's without ever having a problem. I am running a Purolater filter I picked up at Advance Auto for a couple bucks. I think it's a good thing to avoid fuel/gunk related problems in these sensitive carbs.
