A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Fuel Gauge OHMS for 550EFF?

  • Thread starter Thread starter Colorado85gs550

think of the resistance as a bottle neck, either way you go there is still resistance

I might be stuck with disassembly of the stock gauges and pulling the fuel gauge out and making a custom gauge out of it...................

does it not look feasable to flip the resistor contacts on the sender?

I don't know what they look like at the sending unit.........

no not the wires the whole contact so the 0 ohm is on top instead of bottom (or vise versa) not switching wires, you have to physically make the float touch the 0 when full and 90 when out or vise versa

but if there are 2 wires coming out of the tank, wouldn't you think that one would be attached to the 6 ohm resistor contact and the other attached to the 97 ohm resistor contact?

so that if I connect the wire for the 6 ohm contact to the wire for the 90 ohm in the gauge and vice versa I should get what I'm looking for........

your fuel gauge isnt a resistor, it is a variable resistor offically called a potentiometer or POT

This is what the fuel gauge is esentially but remove the ground and you have your circuit. There is no set resistance the "middle" of the circuit has a bunch of contacts in a line, all with different increasing resistances that as the float arm moves it increases or decreases.

I hope this helps, i am off to bed.

If your still confused i can continue explanations and try to find some better pictures. Or just google search how a fuel sender works, or more info on poteniometers

Good luck

I'm going to Autozone to buy an Auto Meter 0/90 ohm gauge today and I'm going to MAKE it work:D

I'll keep you posted as to how it works out!!

lol if worst comes to worst just remember that full is empty and empty is full!
