So Old Colt, to be clear, you are saying you think it would be best to tape and then inject or inject and then sand to a finish? Also you mentioned the groove to stabilize the float. Upon closer inspection, mine has a similar situation. The retainer clip just wasn't pushed on far enough for me to notice the connection.

Yes jacora, I agree. I think I will do the repair and then toss the whole works into some fuel and slosh it around for a few days to test.

I expect if you tape over the ends and inject the foam within, this will help stabilize the float but also makes the foam close the end cells might provide a more reliable repair.
