A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

fuel starvation/bad gas mileage

here's the new petcock, with the old one for comparison:

perhaps one of the more technically savvy members could comment on this. The petcock is essentially a valve through which the fuel flows from tank to carbs, but it only flows when there is vacuum, right? That's what the other line on the petcock is for, to connect to a vacuum line on the carb.

Hi,

Yes, that's correct. I think you get your vacuum from the left carb, that nipple there on the outside. The other two nipples above the idle adjuster are for vent hoses.

Great thread, nice work!

EDIT: I just noticed your last post was a week ago. Did you move to a new section? Lemme check. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Nope, I'm still here in this section :) I got my tank back yesterday, I'll post some pics tonight. If I can, I'll go ahead and put it back on the bike tonight, but I have to wait for the liner to cure before I put gas in it.

The dumb things I do when I'm tired. I went to put the tank on last night, and tried to hook the line from the carbs to the vacuum port on the petcock, and from the vacuum port on the left carb to the gas line on the petcock  So I'll have to stop somewhere to get a new vacuum line, as the gas line is too big.

Here's the before shot of the inside of the tank:

here's what the inside of the tank looks like now:

As I was told by one local shop I called to inquire about tank de-rusting/sealing, it looks like the tank has been coated with raspberry jam. I picked up some vacuum hose yesterday, just have to put that in and connect the gas line, and wait for the liner to cure. So close...

It figures, I get the bike back together, and the battery doesn't have enough juice to turn the starter. I'll check it again in the morning, but I think I need a new battery.

Got new battery at Sears today, put in battery acid, let it charge all day. It was charged even before I left for work at 3:30, and when I got home tonight at 10:30, I put said battery in bike, hooked everything up. Filled up the tank, hit the starter button and...nothing. Tried it with the choke, without the choke, throttle wide open, midway, and completely let go of it, but still nothing. Also tried with the petcock both on reserve and on, and still nothing. I wonder if there's no gas getting through to the cylinders? Help!

this morning, I took another crack at it. Still wouldn't start, but then I checked the gas line, and there was a kink in it. So, I trimmed it back until the kink was gone, and after a few tries, got the bike started. I changed the oil, checked the pressure in the tires, and took it out for a ride. :D Much rejoicing!
