It's a bit of both. Aside from the weight (as mentioned) the newer style aluminum frames and swingarms have a lot less flex, especially in a race-bred sportbike, then the steel tubes on the older GS. To me, frame flex while cornering feels like the middle of the bike starts to sag while cornering hard. The flex alone doesn't really give you a "funky" feel entering a corner... it hits hardest when you first settle into your turn, not when you start your turn-in. For me, it made the bike feel a bit spongy, but not unstable. (This is from road-racing a crappy '89 Ninja)
