    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gas dripping. 1980 Gs550L

I rebuilt the carbs and the bike is running so much better. However I have a small amount of gas on the ground coming from what appears to be an overflow drain. Does anyone know what is the correct position for the petcock on these silly 1980 vacuum operated ones. I am thinking that maybe the new petcock is in prime. There is no way to tell which setting is which on this model. Should the grove that you have to turn with a screw driver go up and down or side to side?
 
I think 'on' is horizontal, 'prime' vertical. If that doesn't fix it, you might check your float heights, float needles, and their seats.
 
Just on one carb? Gas is getting too high in the bowl, or the getting past the float needle valve. You have to figure out which carb(s), and weather the float height is within spec. If so, suspect the float needle is scored, or the springy post on he needle is not 'springing' and needs a soak in carb cleaner and coaxing.
 
I am not sure if it is on carb or not. It is comeing out the air of drain hose. So I assume it is comeing throught the breather hose into the air box?
 
When you rebuilt those carbs did you replace the O-rings on the float valve seats? If you didn't, even if you have the float needles clean and sealing, they will leak around the needle seats.
 
Yes I replaced all the o rings. The problem has stopped I have not ran it for more than a few minuets. I am wondering now if it was more like moisture that snarled of gas. It is cold here. I will start it up again this weekend with a collection dish under to really see what's going on. I check the oil and it has not increased in volume. The oil also appears to not have any gas in it at all.
