A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Gas in oil

I realized I should probably be in this forum for my problem. I had some great replies last night. I definitely have oil over the fill line. Gas smell in the crankcase. It leaked from what looks like the upper transmission cover on the inside which trickled down to the oil pan. This all happened after I filled the tank for the first(new, used owner that I am)time to capacity. The gentlemen last night said its probably the petcock. Is that the only reason for this? Thanks

Fuel back-flowing down the petcock vacuum line and into the carbs/cylinders/crankcase is a common failure. Weak float needles are another, particularly if the petcock is set to the Prime position, where fuel pressure on the needles never stops.

Check on Ebay under Georgefix for a good deal on a new petcock. And for Gawd's sake don't run it with gas in the oil. Change the oil and run it for around 50 km and then do it again with a new filter. This is all after installing the new petcock. Don't bother with a rebuild kit, they don't work.....

Thanks for your reply. So you believe its the petcock and not the faulty float needle?

The float needle can't leak if there's nothing to leak, with a good petcock the fuel is completely shut off when the engine isn't running. There are two paths for leakage, one is the vacuum line as Ed mentioned, the other is past the float needle, but niether one occurs with a functioning petcock.

The purpose of the needle valve is to control the level of fuel in the bowl when the engine is running, it is not it's job to hold back the fuel when it's not running. The fact that it will sometimes has nothing to do with it. Replace the petcock, change the oil, and get on with the rest of the list of neglected maintenance.

Thanks so much for all of your patience. I will indeed get a new petcock.

Second time I've read georgefix on GSR for petcocks...

Rather certain he has been mentioned a few more times than that, but please make sure you get the right "George". :-k

Evidently there is a "Wired George" that handles some electrical items that does not share the same good reputation.

.

Which Gearge is the liar that used to say he could synch the carburetors and fine tune them on his engine so you don't have to?

George A or George B?

I'm sure he has....I've been going with Z1...as a matter of fact, just got my fuel petcock this week...less than $50 including shipping. Pics and analysis forthcoming

When I bought my old gs1000 a year and a half ago I used a rebuild kit for the petcock and it works fine

That would be WIRED GEORGE claiming he runs every set of carbs he rebuilds on a good engine......i got some extra room on my cloud in heaven if anyone interested in joining me too.

This is a different George selling petcocks and things? Good to know.

Yes it is. And as far as I can tell they are the same ones Suzuki sells. They are indistinguishable. Far cheaper check out the link in my previous post. His inventory is constantly changing so he may not have what you want. Fast shipper as well.....
