    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Get the seat off without key

Oi!

79GS550. Anybody know how to get the seat off without a key? Same goes for the gas cap.

I'll probably just do away with the ignition, but any hotwiring tips would be nice.

Uncle-In-Law is giving me a 79GS550. Woot.
Problem is, it's sat outside for a couple of decades and nobody has a key.

Weak.

Any tips would be helpful.
 
there is a 3 digit number on the seat lock and on the ignition somewhere. get this number and you can have a key made.
 
there's a guy on e-bay selling replacement keys
you'd have to have a code for it, i think, though

On my gs650 I can get the seat off with a LONG flat bladed screwdriver from underneath the seat in the back at the locking mechanism.

It's like a door bolt.

It takes a bit of finessing to do it though.
I could probably take pictures in a couple of days if you need it.
 
It's pretty easy to take off the seat lock and get to the cable that releases the seat. (At least on my GS.)

On my parts bike at least, what worked was I removed the seat cushion and foam, used a Makita diamond bladed grinder and cut the back of the bolts holding the lock arm??. It is a bit of a brute force method but it was a $250 parts bike. The small victory in it for me is I would not have had to ruin the seat lock which I tried to drill out first and did not work.

Sounds like you want to go keyless, you should be able to take the tumblers out of the locks, then you can turn them with any screwdriver type device.
 
Having a key later on would be grand, simply to get the tank lid and seat off. Like I said, I have no qualms about being done with the ignition switch.
Taking the tumblers out isn't a bad idea for now.
I'll try and find the number for now.... wish me luck.

It has been sitting for 25 years and is free for me... my own suggestion of explosives might just be the trick.
We'll see.

I was hoping some of you ex-thieves might know a better way.
 
With all the recent talk about "bump keys" I would be surprised if you couldn't get a blank Suzi key and use it to get into all the tumblers. Search "bump key" on Youtube and you'll find helpful videos on how (and why) they work. I've never tried to make or use one but it seems pretty straightforward.

If this is an ongoing problem you might want to drill a tiny hole in the lever, attach a small cord or cable, and route the cord to the front of the seat so that you can easily release the latch any time you wish to do so. Just make sure if you do this that you route the cord or cable so that it doesn't snag any moving parts or (if it's a cable) doesn't short circuit anything under the seat.

One other idea would be to replace the tumbler, if possible, with a "push button" release. This would eliminate the need to try and snake a key past the saddlebags.

Either way would be an improvement over having to always "finesse" a screwdriver under the seat.

Another option, which I used, is to unbolt the ignition lock and take the whole thing to a locksmith shop, where they can make a key given a few days. Then you'll have "one key to rule them all": ignition, gas tank, seat and helmet lock.

To get at the lock, take off the headlight and instruments - it's not hard you'll see the bolts that hold them on. The ignition lock is held in place with a couple of allen bolts.

Yeah, ya do. Thanks though, I'd never thought of looking there... silly me.

If I remember correctly, that type of lock is only used on the L models.

The 'standard' models have seats that hinge on one side and have a lock on the other.

tis true. the late 70 I picked up locks on one side and hinges on the t'other.
