GK seat fit a GS?

OK - here's one for the collective. Did a search under several terms, couldn't find a previous thread.

A) How does the stock GK seat match up against a stock GS one, in terms of comfort, both for solo and 2-up?

B) Would the aforementioned GK seat fit a GS frame? I would figure that modification of either seat or frame or both would be needed, but are they even close in mounting points?

C) Any other thoughts or brain spasms?

Eric and I figured this one out when I was at his place. We had both bikes there to compare.

By GK you mean the 82-84 model GS1100GK correct?

This seat uses the exact same pan and mounting places as the 82-84 GS850G & GS1100G.

A pre-82 model this will not work on, without modification, as the seats attach differently.

I cant speak to the comfort of the GK seat as I've never ridden on one, but the standard 82+ G seat is very good, at least for me.

Hope this helps.

Yeah - I improperly worded my question. Corrections:

A) How does the stock 1100 GK seat match up against a stock GS 850 seat, in terms of comfort, both for solo and 2-up?

B) Would the aforementioned 1100 GK seat fit a 1980 GS 850 frame? I would figure that modification of either seat or frame or both would be needed, but are they even close in mounting points?

A.) I can't answer this, never ridden on the GK seat.

B.) In case I was not clear before... The GK seat will not swap directly on, as it attached using a rear mounted seat lock, and two hooks on the frame that the nubs at the front of the seat pan fit under. The '80 850G seat uses side mounted hinges and a side mounted lock.

If you really wanted to do this, you would need to weld the hooks onto the G frame for the nubs of the GK seat to attach, find a way to mount the latching point in the back for the lock, as well as cut a round hole in the tail cowling so you can actually use the key for the lock.

OR you may have better luck keeping the 850 seat pan, and mounting the foam and cover from the GK seat to that. To me this would be much easier.

Yeah - I got that the two mount differently. I figured on some mods - but your idea of mounting the GK seat and foam shape to the 850 certainly has merit. We're looking at a lot of possibilities. Dunno - maybe the stock 850 seat is as good as we're going to do.

Thanks!

The seat is insanely comfortable. But will only mount to 1100g models other than the gk

Drop Dale (RustyBronco) a PM he has both standing in his garage right now.

Dale, let me know if you would like a few pictures and some measurements.

oh right - forgot about that!

<Dale2 to Dale1> I think some underside pics and relative measurements would be very nice! Thanks in advance.

Is the GK seat any taller to sit on than the 1100G seat? My G seat is way too low for me.

Tom, I'd have to measure both of them to be sure. Right off hand I'd say if the GK seat is any higher than the G's seat, it's not very much, if any.

I would have to say they are the same height. I can't say with absolute certainty that they are as my 82 850G had an 83 seat on it. But from the one 82 seat I recall seeing, the heights are very close.

It would take a bit of engineering to make a GK seat fit your 79. First of all the GK seat pan is longer, the heights of the seat bumper brackets differ in height and placement among other things...

OK Dale - thanks! That gives me the information I need. Looks like my best bet is to get a GK seat or just a cover, and have an uphosterer custom fit it, with new foam, to an 850GT seat pan....

Hey - wanna sell me that one in the picture? I understand the owner took off for parts unknown....:-$

Errrhhhmmm, I heard that Dale, but he will be back just as soon as that white stuff stops falling. ;)

Dale, neither of those two seats are for sale, as is the other 850GT seat belonging to Stan temporarily residing in my garage. :)
