Seriuosly!! How can you see any details on the front rotors in that one picture of his bike????...

Actually 2 pics in his post, Chuck. The lower one shows the RHS rotor... and it is in fact backward. Maybe refresh your screen, as you probably ain't getting the second pic.

Again Dan...how can you see any details in the one picture he posted of his bike?? Thats the original question and still is.

Or buy a better monitor, I'm looking at this on my iPhone and can clearly see the cooling holes. Though they looks to be round, as though they weren't there from the factory....

Geez chuck. You ride around on a motorcycle with those eyeballs? ;)

Frank..as I scrolled down there was only one picture..then i went and dragged to the right and theres the other picture.. And to Dan, my apologies. I really didnt see any second picture. So whats the difference in which way the holes point??

The way the loaded on my laptop was side by side..i didnt realise that i had to drag the picture to see the one on the right..

My '79 750L had a fuel gauge and axle in front of the fork legs. It has less offset in the triple clamps than my '78 which has the axle on line with the fork legs.

I have a 79 L and while checking for differences found the frame and triple clamps are the same as a E models

It shouldn't be if you compare with the '79 750E. The '80 had leading axle forks, so the triple clamps should be about the same.

Check the part numbers in basscliffs scanned parts lists. If you think about it a manufacturer when producing a limited version of an existing model they are going to change as few parts as possible .The main non cosmetic changes seem to be 17" rear and lengthened front forks necessitating a leading axle to reduce trail back to an acceptable amount.Maybe they did change more things with the 1980 model.A quick part # comparison will tell.
Have been keeping an eye out for tank, seat, rear mudguard ,front forks,18" rear etc. to maybe change it to gs 750 e spec.I know of a complete and original gs1000 sitting in a shed not far away which may be a donor candidate depending on parts interchangeability.

All you purists look away or lose you lunch...

These are the best straight on side views I have at various stages of the '78 E and '79 L Note on the E the axle is on line with the fork tubes, and how much of the head stock is visible. On the L, the one that has been raked out and has the leading axle, there is less offset between the fork tubes and steering stem. Now if anybody has an extra set of '78 E triple clamps they'd like to donate to correct my trail on the L, just PM for where to ship them:D

I also remember some slight differences to the frame under the tail end of the tank between these two bikes. Perhaps due to the longer tank on the E model. That's all been cut out but I can measure the tanks for any differences when I get home from the holidays.

....aaaaaaand back to my tank issue ;)

For anyone wondering my bike has been seriously modded from what I can work out. New dials, front forks, drilled front brake disc, exhaust and tank.

It seems to be either a 78 or 79 but was registered as an 80 so as I say its all a bit mad. Just need a tank with a fuel sensor... :-\\\

Right, I'll measure up and take pics of the '79 L tank in a day or two when I get home. It does have a fuel sensor. Unfortunately it also has an oddball fuel cap unless someone can pin point a cross over for it, so if the size will work for you I recommend only getting one that still has it's cap.

Nice one... got an email off a bloke who said he might have a GS750L tank which has fuel float/fuel sensor so hopefully that will go work out. Plus my Baby Bike (Honda Shadow) is off to get fixed this afternoon... I can feel this month is going to get expensive :)

Hang on, now I'm really thinking you will run into some fitment issues if you go for an L tank like the blue one in post 20. At least wait til I can measure mine up for you, but I did find two build photos just barely showing the difference between the frames for the tank mount. Will edit pics in in a moment.

Note the location of the tank mount bolt hole in each case. I believe the L seat comes a little further forward to fill that difference.

My tank looks a lot longer... I might just be best trying to get a fuel reader cap for the tank... Aghhhh why is life so awkward at times. I actually prefer my longer looking tank too. Anyone wanna buy a fuel gauge? lol

Not only are the tanks different lengths, the front mounts are even different widths.

Oh well, good luck with your fuel gauge quest. If it comes down to modifying a tank, have you considered the clear fuel tube option? Not for some people, but I like it if done right. Google image search:

WOW I really like that fuel line on the side of the tank. I want one... any ideas where you can buy em?

A couple of places provide weld in kits. If the tank you're considering doing this to has been lined in the past then I'd just forget about welding or brazing on it. Wash the tank out really well, and some people take it a step further and fill the gas tank with water when welding.

Here's some random google results. I do not have any experience buying from these sellers. I'm sure ebay has a few kits as well but didn't check.
