If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gradually gets harder to start and conks out after 8 miles ish

And to get everyone up to speed and the status now is:

- I am going to need a new or second hand regulator . I can't be sure of my two ones workability.
(It is possible as someone said I may need a stator but RR first)
- starter motor, or just the brushes or repair kit. Suggestions ?
And I want an engine with a kick start !

Let's not deviate from this .

Cheapish regulator ordered . Should arrive by Friday.

Still need advice on a brush kit for starter motor ? But done that in other thread on here.

I have to make a update on mistake of my RR test stats. I'm getting confused but these here are right : it remains to be faulty.

In a few days time I'll go back to the first page and change the stats there to be the same....

The bottom line is the regulator still bench tests faulty !!

Regulator: (the one that was on the bike when issue started)
Disconnected regulator from bike / multimeter (mm) on diode test function.

Mm red lead to RR power wire / Mm black to each of 3 RR wires
= All show as | (infinite) this correct

Black mm wire to RR red power wire / Red mm wire to to each of RR wires
= All show 0.12v
All should be around 0.5v so this is faulty.

Black mm wire to neg RR output / Red mm wire to 3 RR wires
= | (infinite) this correct

Red mm wire to to neg RR output /
= All show 0.58v - This is correct as should be near 0.5v

Another update :
Great success on the testing.
The original is faulty via a bench test.. faulty in one single bench test but it I assume would cause what is happening to the bike.
I have ordered another one which comes tomorrow.

The other RR which has a sense wire which tested to be okay flummoxed me. Yet still it wouldn't charge the battery on tests increasing revs.

Remember I put this one in a box and put an X on it for a reason I cannot remember.

Anyway this one the one with the sense wire I put back on the bike and tested without the sense wire on and instantly it charged the battery increasing voltage but too high to 16 volts.
So that is why I put a cross on it as the sense wire doesn't work or isn't reliable or I wired it incorrectly. I wired it to the rear brick pedal.
(I am too hopeless at chasing voltage drops and all that sort of stuff.. but I could see there was 12 volts coming out of where I wired the sense wire 2)

Someone on here did explain to me how it works but I have conceded that it is too much trouble and too risky to use. That overcharging caused me a lot of problems many many years ago.

So basically I think we can say the stator is okay. It passes all tests I did on it and the battery does increase voltage with revs.

I am well aware someone on this thread did say this is a typical GS charging problem..... And to that end I'll keep my sense wire RR for future tests on a stator etc as it is.known to work (for testing purposes )

So when the new regulator arrives tomorrow I'll update.
(I still have the problem that the starter motor is absolutely knackered, which I will do when I'm satisfied the charging works)

Maybe it's already been mentioned, but check that your grounds have good contact with bare metal, like the back of the crank case. Posplayer had a write-up on a single point ground... I think... anyway, a corroded ground will prevent the R/R from functioning. Speaking of not functioning, my memory fails me. I can't remember which one, shunt or series, sends excess electric current to the ground wire.

My wiring and harness definitely need some care. I used to ground my previous regulator to the frame so I didn't forget and wire it incorrectly.... On the positive terminal of battery and blow all up. I have done that in the past as sometimes this bike has been left for months and I quickly put the battery back in incorrectly. Life is no longer in a comfortable garage !!

I now connect it directly to the negative terminal on the battery again, labelled. I think that is the correct way to do it. It worked that way or on the chassis always.

The sense wire RR on paper seems a good option as it senses the voltage somehow.. and doesn't allow it to get too high. The issue with that one it didn't after a few years. It's back in the box with a cross on it.... But to be used for testing regulators.
