A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi Guys,

I have had my 1978 Gs1000 HC for eight years and have just had to swap engines,
I have put in a 1981 Gs engine and carbs and swapped the ignition from my old engine (aftermarket electronic).
The old carbs had two cables for the throttle push and pull.
Do the new carbs only have a pull cable? And will a 81-84 throttle cable fit straight on and just blank the other hole in the hand throttle.
Also do the newer carbs have a choke cable as I already changed my switchgear for TL 1000 switches which have a choke lever already on them.

Thanks for any help

Stu

More info is needed such as what kind of engine you installed, what carbs, what country you live in, and so forth.

Here in the US market all the GS's received CV carbs starting in 1980 - one throttle cable and cable choke for all the bigger bikes.

Sorry

My Gs is a united kingdom model with manual choke and slide carbs with twin throttle cables i think you have answered my question as I have fitted cv carbs 54mm inlets so a standard single Et model throttle cable should be fine.
As for the choke cable I will get a TL 1000 or bandit one to fit the switchgear.
Is the timing the same on early and later gs1000 engines?

Cam timing or ignition timing?

Early bikes had points, later has electronic ignition, with seperate ignitor box. All details are available in the factory service manual. If you don't have one yet I suggest you download one from basscliffs site. No manual = No go.

if you're UK based then you may want to pop into oldskoolsuzuki.info ;)

When changing from the push/pull cables to a single cable,
all that I do is leave the not used cable in the mounts that hold the wire loom to the frame. (Into the atmosphere above the air-box)
The choke cable works on the CV carbs.
So, there is no reason to change the cables at the throttle.
