A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi,

I just bought a 1980 GS450S with about 2500 miles on it that had been sitting in a garage for several years. The previous owner said it needs a new starter. Upon putting a battery in it and trying it, I can hear the starter spinning but the engine doesn't turn over. I did a search and found this to mean that the starter clutch is bad.

My two questions:

1. I've determined that I need to get the carbs and airbox off to get to the starter compartment. How does one remove the airbox? I can't see where there's room to get it out.

2. Can I just buy a new starter, or is the starter clutch a separate part that I would have to get separately?

Thanks!
Richard

If it is indeed the starter clutch You do not need to remove the carbs You need to remove the left side engine cover/ stator cover to get to the starter clutch which is a seperate unit. You will also need a puller to remove the alternator rotor from the crankshaft.

Thanks!

That makes things a lot easier. I found a starter clutch from an 82 GS 450 on ebay. Is there any reason it wouldn't work on mine?

Thanks again

Richard

I don't see why it won't fit. Additional Note to pre post:: You need special tool to remove alt rotor from crankshaft

FYI... it wasn't even the starter clutch! The bolt holding the alternator rotor on the crank had just come loose.

Now I just need to find replacements for all those screws I broke trying to get the left cover off. lol

Thanks for the help!
