For the exhaust bolts (and others) I followed what SVSooke already said, days of spraying with rust pentrant and then using a hammer and punch hit each bolthead good and solid, square on the center. This helps break the oxidation in the threads. Then slow and easy out with a six point socket. If you feel it start to bind when removing spray it down and turn it back in, then it should come right out.
On another note, he is right WD-40 is not a rust pentrant, and I didn't see any in your pic of fluids.

Kroil is great but expensive...

PB Blaster is what my choice is, always worked well fpr me...

There are others out there and you may find different choices being a Canook than us Yanks have. But the home brew of auto-trans fluid and acetone mixed 50/50 works WONDERS! I always have some of those two in my chemical stash to mix if needed.

i use Liquid wrench for a penetrating oil. works well.
i ll have a look at kroil and pb.

I ll ask my brother to spray some penetrating oil on the screws all week long, i do not stay where the GS is so i can t do it myself out of weekends, i guess he will manage that much

hi guys!

this friday was a day off for me, needed some air after some personal problems, my boss is a nice man

spent 10 hours in the garage working on my sweet rusted pie.

My goal for this weekend is to take the engine out of the frame and maybe start to do some work on it!

here s what i have been up to today :

First, attempted to remove one of the exhaust bolts, wich has been sprayed with penetrating oil (not wd40) all week long + 1/5... and broke it!
This ...... severely ****ed me off!

so i took the bull by the horns

Basically, i guessed the week of spraying helped anyway and what i did on top of that is the following :

-Hit it hard twice, dead on center with an old dead screwdriver and a soft hammer.
- heat them up good and then throw some cold water to shock them.
-tighten a bit more
- and then it came off like a charm.

a bit overdone, i know, but wouldn t take any chances, i hate to drill screws,
will come too fast the moment i ll have to deal with the broken one in my engine

and one down! a puffy rusted finish is always nice, isn't it!?

by the way, here is the color of my drained engine oil.

NASTY! but have seen worse.

in the removal progress i had a nice gift from an Moldavian butcher,
look at that nicely done rethreading...

i then removed the oil cooling lines and things.
cleaned and stored it, i will probably end up using the one on the part bike.

Following was the removal of the starter and charging system.
here what it looks like inside the cover, i think it s not bad at all,
and according to my multimeter, it s in perfect electrical shape.
but who knows!

i guess there are no other way but buy the special tool for that one
couldn t macgyver anything for this!
it s clean in there, i am happy.

the parts bike brushes were 4 millimeter longer than the other one!

doing some cleaning for the cover part, this will be painted in semi gloss black, like the whole engine.

told you, i love pictures too.
(but i apologize for out of focus ones, plus the almost omnipresent flash, with all the goo on my fingers i do not like to play in manual settings too much,
the garage is badly lit, mostly in ''contre-jour'', wich makes bad pictures, but whatever! i ll take fraking nice shots of the project when it will be done, so you all can see that pictures is actually my profession. lol)

i took a look under the top cover of the engine (always forget the name in english!)
no sign of bad things so far.
by the way, the engine rotates well by hand, with nice suction noises, that was some good pr0n, right there!

and put back the cover because tomorrow i will move the engine out!

underneath the clutch cover lies a terrible creature,
made of pure devilish mud!

i do not have pictures of every thing i did, but basicaly, when i remove smtg, i clean it right away, man this takes ages to clean all that devilish poo!
i need some magic elves on crack to help me there.

EDIT : the last guy that did something on this GS loved a brownish silicone crap and used a shatload of it everywhere, i mean, i found some to seal the brake fluid reservoir cover, cmon!

but we managed to do it. thanks bro!

special tool to remove the big bolts

we tried the ''lie the big lady on the side '' trick, well....
didn t work really well, so we put everything back on wheels,
lifted it, surprisingly, it s not that heavy at all!
(it s my young brother you see there)

after some tidinessisation (yes i can say that, i am french, remember!?)

now i will give a good cleaning of the engine block, with wd 40, simple green and a big hose ^^.

Don't I just know about the cleaning of parts, I have spent over a year, just cleaning and refurbishing parts to get them back up to standard on mine. I feel your pain.

Opening the engine block!

took both camshafts out
and spotted a small broken part in the process,
this ''holds'' the oil pipe, i think it will do without this piece, it did already

no more camshafts,
remember that brownish goo sh*t somebody used on the gaskets (and o-rings!) everywhere?!
it sticks like an ugly fat girl and her first boyfriend, i HATE that thing!
here on the chain guide for example, while it says in the servicing manual, ''Pull the chain guide''
i had to swear the crap out of it while trying not to break anything... anyway!

let s pull it baby!
needed some rubber hammerin.

the metal gasket is shot, right?

here s the valves, heavy carbon buildup on the 4th one.

was really happy to witness perfect surface inside the pistons chambers!

pistons looked good too. but they need some cleanup!

u can see there some weird sand deposit that was lying beetween the piston chambers and bottow block.

that s not a good sight, but luckily none of it was in the chambers , was all around the long fixation ''screws''

my workspace is full now!

hey guys, i have a question for you.

I am still waiting to receive the seller's evaluation of the GS's value. (he has a friend who owns a garage)
i need it here to transfer the ownership cos i ll pay a tax on that evaluation (pfff...)
that s the way it works for 25+ years old vehicles.

so basicaly i have everything now, transfer paper and titles, but cannot complete the transfer in my name yet,
does anybody know somewhere/somebody who could do it from pictures? (the evaluation, you pervertz!)
i start to be scared of not getting these paper one day!
(PO said they are mailed already...but well...nothing so far, it s been 2 weeks)

did some cleaning, not done yet but after two complete day and an half in the garage my hands started to hurt a bit.
getting that cooked mud out of the fins is a real PITA
now, i am going to need some special tools
and all the gaskets before going further with the engine rebuilt.

i need more money for that, it s going to wait a week.
next week end, because i will not have the tools to keep going with the engine it will be cleaning things, if the money follows i ll buy carb gaskets and hex screws.
or/and probably taking care of brake lines!

i think, when the project will be over, i will clean and part out the part bike, i might not even use it s engine
