All welds done by a professional with a tig welder. After 700mi. All still look perfect. Not wanting to highjack this thread. Just wanted to enforce the idea of upgrading the brakes and tires when building a 1300 or 1400cc motor.

Point taken....That's the first thing I looked at...Started the build with 92 wc 750 fork's (tree's down) and oilcooled swinger...Never installed the swinger and now have Busa front and rear.....Want to finish this by next spring

I was just giving you ****. No worries.

I just found a 1992 gxsr 1100 with a built 1397cc engine. Unfortunately, there is no paperwork for the build, so it's kind of a blind buy. I think I can get the whole bike for $1200. I may do that and swap it over. Does it pretty much just bolt right in or do I need to weld new mounts? I have a MIG welder anyway, so not too much to be worried about.

the shim heads on the GSXR's are crap IMO.
cams cost HUGE money.
steer clear plus most seller's are misinformed or out right liars as far as work done to an engine.
a stock bandit engine with gsxr cams set to around 100 lobe centers and a set of 36/38 rs carbs will make you giggle to about 130 reliable HP.

I agree on the shim heads only 92 I think ? I also like the bandit 1200 as a starting point. Always better to start with stock and know for sure what you have done to it and by whom its done. Mine was built from the katana 1127. Mounting was not to hard as the rear two went right in the front required new connector plates and I'm not using the bottom two. Mine is an 82 750 frame.

What makes the 1200 a better platform than the 16v gs1100? I see the 1200 has a stock oil cooler, but it looks like they both make about the same power stock.

One thing the newer motors are all narrower (better cornering clearance) and it is only because the Katana and Bandit are detuned that they make similar power. A GSXR 1127cc 1100 is rated a at 145 hp. v.s. 122 hp for a 1133c 1150 and the GS is heavier.

you can spend less to get more from the oil cooled platform.
less weight.
you can get 130ish HP from a stock bandit 1200 or kat 1100 engine with stock parts(gsxr cams).
what will you spend on a GS based engine to get the same HP not even considering an HD basket modification cost
makes you go hmmmmmm don't it.

The Katana motor has a heli cut gear on the crank the Bandit does not it has the straight cut crank gear like the GSXR1100 crank does. Much nicer to start with straight cut crank gear.

i'm aware of the difference and on an insert bearing engine...doesn't make much if any difference IMO.
NOTHING like on a roller engine......

The things I like about the oil cooled engine are, smaller in height and width, alternator charging no stator RR problems, great cylinder head oiling system and with large cooler I'm running 6 quarts. Its a great engine the evolution of the original gsx engines we love. That being said I still think the GS engine is also a great platform to build I believe they are more durable when taken above the 1300cc size

It looks like 1200 Bandits can be had for under $2000 at times. Looking at that bike, damn near every part is better than the GS. It almost makes more sense just to change bikes. I'm sure the frame is a lot lighter too. I wish I could fit bandit brakes to my gs1100 wheels. I really like my wheel setup.

My buddy is riding a 77 kz1000 with a turbo without an oil cooler... no over heating problems with it at all.... he ported the heads, but the bottom end is not far from stock.... but like someone said earlier, he did tons of break and suspension work to it first! It's the bike that won street special at the Indianapolis cycle world rolling concourse...... and it runs on pump gas!

The Kawis COME with straight cut crank & clutch gears already & it will run on pump gas till he puts it on boost good ONCE! Ray.

That's true ray, he put a lock up clutch on it.... but he's afraid of running the boost to it's full potential because it might eat the stock gear box.... (I think 2nd is it's weak point)...even with that said, it's wicked fast! Lol

Does anyone know of a writeup for the bandit 1200 motor install in a GS chassis? I haven't been able to find much. The wiring is my biggest concern.
I just found someone in my city selling a 1999 bandit 1200 motor for $700.

OSS has the drawings on their site somewhere. Keep in mind, the GS motors make more TORQUE & that is what moves a bike as heavy as a GS! Ray.
