GS1000 Base Gasket Replace. w/ Pics

The 'doohickey" is just a dowel pin, and yes it's supposed to just slide out. Wont contribute to the oil leak either.

If it had a recent rebuild, then you may not need the new cam chain guides either.

But, it would appear that the PO skimped on the base gasket, so check the guides

When I did mine, I repainted silver, and heated up the painted cylinder block up in the oven for an hour or so to cure it. If you do that, be sure and put the block in the oven upside down and let it cool down in the oven before you remove it.

That's to keep the cylinder liners in place. Get the highest temp paint you can find, and don't scrimp on the prep.

Yes, use a brass brush to clean the combustion chambers. Don't bother with the pistons, keeping the debris out of the rings and cases will be a lot of work. Most of it will burn off when you fire up the motor.

Clean it, paint it, and reassemble. No honing or rings required

What kind of prep? It'd sure be a pain to sand all those fins. Would a media blast be OK? Glass?

Another question on re-assemble:

The manual says to use ring compressor strps and some sort of positioning tool. Is that neccesary? What's the cheap way, hoseclamps?

Cleaning up the head.

Egg cartons are the bestest!:-D

you can reassemble the pistons-cylinders without the rings compressor. a little fiddly but enirely possible. make sure to oil them lightly.

i'd powdercoat the cylinders. gives a nicer finish than paint, imho

maybe obvious to you, but news to me. thanks!
(so, i should shut up on the things that i don't really know about, shouldn't i? )

Mr. psyguy,

There is a sprocket under that little cover on top of the 850 cam chain. I didn't know it until I took off the valve cover the first time. Well, I guess I kind of knew by looking at the pictures in the manual. :-D

Not to worry. I'm still learning my bike too.

Great pictures Mr. Billyboy. Your past BOM deserves all this TLC.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

oh, i do know my 850 inside out, but since everyone says a 1000 is a bored-out 850, i kind of assumed that the other internals on the two bikes would be exactly the same - such as that "sprocket guide" on top of the camchain
ps. i still wonder why they would change that little bit on a 1000 model, but leave it unchanged on 850 :?

Bingo............

Yeppers. The manual recommends doing that.

So, What should I use to bond the base gasket to the case and cylinders? I'm not there yet, but I want to get it in advance. Anything for the head gasket?

When I rebuilt my 650 topend, I oiled the base gasket and installed the head gasket dry. I think you could use a little sealer on base if desired, but keep head gasket dry, it should compress on final head torquing and seal without anything.

Base gasket - grease it with a light coat of lithium

Head gasket - Do not ever put anything on your head gasket

Be sure you don't forget the egg shaped "O" rings at the back corners between the cases and block
Plus the one around the cam chain well between the head and block

Thanks for all the detailed pics. I'm about to tear down the top end of my 1000 too and the pictures sure are a big help. :D

Thanks for the help on the gaskets guys.
80GS1000, Glad I can help you. I feel I can trudge on through this without a whole lot of fear, being that I've got a spare engine if I screw up too badly.:?

I studied up on the manual this morning while the kids were watching cartoons. Everything looks fairly simple.:-s Which makes me suspicious.

Now I've got to get a torque wrench.:-s For some of the bolts, like cam bearing caps, 7 f/lbs is not a lot.

Should I get an inch pounds wrench and multiply by 12?

The inch pounds is what I use. You'll probably find it difficult to find a torque wrench that goes from 7-90 ft lb, so you'll need two of them anyway.

in this part of the world the torque wrenches often come with a conversion chart. there's also one in my manual.

for the cam cover bolts you can tighten the bolts with a spanner only. i would describe it as "not very tight" (lol). saves you money for the second torque wrench. just make sure all the bolts are equally tight. if there's any leak at the gasket, just tighten the bolts a wee bit more
