Yo homey, props fo da mad pshop skillz....

Ok seriously, you can't go wrong with black - especially with the gold forks. (damn, I'm jealous!)...

Good thing I don't do graphic design for a living.

Yeah, I think a satin or gloss black would look best. The rear rim I have is a Katana 600 4.5x17" three spoke in black, so the black on the tank and side panels will match. I'm still thinking of doing a white skunk stripe in reverence to the 78-79 GS1000s, and to give a little bit of contrast between the seat and tank.

It's not a 300 mile day seat, but it's really not bad.
The rear is foam, so the apssenger is sitting on
about 6 inches of foam.
The brand is ZERO, I've only seen 1 other bike with that seat.
Someone on here found a GS in Japan that had the seat.

Couple of guys here asked for measurements........I have the pictures
with a tape measure on it.
If anyone wants them, email me I can send them out.

It was ME!

I need to either get a new sidestand or cut the existing one so the bike leans to the left more when parked - it's pretty vertical right now when the sidestand's deployed.
.

Cut the stand and weld back the foot.
My 2 pennies

Another bloggish/Dear Diary post - I hope you guys don't mind.

Tonight I installed the new LSL handlebars in their permanent location. They are dead center - 33 cm from the outside of the handlebar riser clamp to the end of the bar on both sides.

After that, I installed the front brake lever and master cylinder reservoir on the bars. I sat on the bike and pushed it around the garage and HOLY CRAP. The difference in rolling resistance between my old Pirelli Sport Demon bias ply and this new Michelin Pilot Power radial front tire is unbelievable. The radial rolls so much more easily, like the bike lost a lot of weight. And it did, actually. The new front end is 15 pounds lighter than the old one.

I also tested out the new front brakes. Wow. Modern sportbike brakes with stainless braided lines are the business. I have the feeling I'm gonna get whiplash the first time I get on the brakes hard. Hello, stoppies. ;)

The more I mod this bike, the more I feel like I'm making the 25th anniversary special edition of this classic bike. All the amazingly fun GS1000 you remember, but even better with good tires, brakes, and suspension.

Mods that honor the GS1000's racing past and potential. And I plan on doing some trackdays on this bike once complete and dialed-in. :)

Kind of like what Kawasaki did with their re-release of the Z1000. Check out this trackday on that bike: http://youtube.com/watch?v=lSRSRG1zVWw :D

Next comes a custom sportbike exhaust. I don't think I'll have enough ground clearance to really lean it over at high speed without exhaust mods.

GS1100 headers can be mounted on GS1000s, and GS1100 headers can go on GSXR1100s, so you must be able to put a Gixxer 1100 pipe on a GS1000 with some mods.

Can a muffler shop extend muffler pipes? If so, I should be able to have the downpipes on a GSXR 1100 exhaust header extended so the downpipes are a bit longer to fit the GS engine. A 4 into 2 into 1 would allow you to have the collector a ways back, improving ground clearance. Then we're clear for a sportbike exhaust can, and about 4.5-6" of ground clearance up front to be able to really get low...

Great idea, and looks good too! What happens when you need to change the bicycle speedo battery? How much battery life do you get from each battery? Or did you hardwire the power input on the speedo to the bike's harness?

Thanks.

So far I haven't had it on there long enough to wear out the battery. I didn't hardwire it to the harness. But when I reassebled it I made sure I could get it apart without much adue.

One of these days I'll just hardwire it to the harness and forget it.

In the 2 years I have had my speedo installed I have probably been without vehicle battery power at least 4 times. The minute you lose power to the speedo you will have reset your milage and wheel size. I'm going to stick with the place-in batteries, unless there is a way to have the place-in batteries as a back up AND vehicle battery power for such a setup. If there is I am all ears :)

Not sure about the circuitry, but your computer has the correct setup: your CMOS battery that keeps all of your configuration data when you turn off/unplug your computer. Or the 9v "backup" battery in some alarm clocks. Some of the electrical gurus here should be able to figure it out.

'Splain this to me.
Are you saying that the bars are 3.3cm long?
Did you mean 33cm?

Whoops. :) Yep, 33 cm.

33 mm wouldn't give you much leverage. ;)

Edited the original post for accuracy.

Another option might be the exhaust systems from Marving which have a flat 4 into 1 collector. Gotta shoot them an email for a price quote.

Today the new GSXR 1000 headlight brackets went on the front. The GS headlight will look sweet on the new forks.

I also had a look at the ignition switch situation. The stock GS1000 ignition switch isn't the same shape/size and doesn't have the same mounting points on the upper triple clamp as the Gixxer 1000. But, you gotta love Suzuki consistency when it comes to ignition switch wiring.

The first pic is of the guts of the stock GS1000 ignition switch. As you can see, there are 4 wires - red, orange, brown, and black. The second pic shows that the new GSXR 1000s have the same wiring! A bit of soldering work to mate the Gixxer ignition switch wires with the GS harness connector and we should be good to go. Not to mention the GSXR ignition switch will bolt right up to the new GSXR top triple tree.

I've got the exhaust ground clearance issue partially solved. My existing V&H hangs under the frame too low for comfort.

So, I picked up a set of stock GSXR 1000 headers for cheap ($25) on fleaBay tonight, picture below. The main attraction to this header is the fact that it's a 4 into 2 into 1 collector, which should greatly increase ground clearance because the collector is only 1 pipe thick.

I fully expect the exhaust port diameter/spacing and downpipe length to be completely different between the two bikes, so it seems there are two options: Mod the existing V&H to fit the new collector, or lengthen and bend the Gixxer header to fit the GS exhaust ports. Either way, a new midpipe will have to be fabbed up. The Gixxer headers are cheap enough that another one might be purchased for more raw material if lengthening is needed. The Gixxer header is also made of titanium, so there should be some weight savings over the V&H steel.

One of the guys over on OSS used a Gixxer header on his Katana, so it seems like a viable solution. TBD. And I reaaaally want a Yoshi sportbike can on my bike - this'll make it that much easier.

Here's the titanium header:

And in the flesh on a very trick Katana in the process of being built, complete with a Yoshi can. Look how tightly the pipes hug the frame. :D

Or on this amazing GS1000 - gimme gimme. :D

That is a NICE bike. Love what you are doing. Keep us posted on that exhaust, as i'm just as concerned about that on my GS, as i'm doing the gsxr fork swap. mmm Titanium....

Sweet! What model of GS do you have, and which GSXR forks are you putting on it?

PS - Wish that Kat were mine - that guy is doing an amazing job.

I am also building a GS1000. I've posted a few pictures before so if you would like to see them do a search on my name.
At the moment I'm getting ready to move house so there is very little going on in my garage. There is a large collection of parts though, a full set of GS1000S bodywork in red/white, a set of standard 1978 bodywork in red, a pair of 17" spoked wheels, a pair of 17" Astralites, a rebuilt 1085 motor with a flowed head and a 1233cc all whistles & bells motor:-). My problem now (apart from a lack of time) is I can't decide what kind of bike to build, a bike along the lines of the new retro Ducati's with wide spoked wheels & the standard red bodywork or a stripped down racer inspired bike with the S bodywork & Astralites. Perhaps after the move I should build both, this is a picture of my titanium pipe ( I wont be using the end can as its far too big ).

I may use this can if nothing better turns up.

Pan-

Sounds like you have a great bike or (bikes!) in the works! Would love to see it when you have it (them) done. :D

Did you have that exhaust custom made from scratch? Or was it derived from a pre-existing exhaust like the GSXR 1000?

Yoshimura has a "Shorty" exhaust that may suit your needs. More info here.

WTG on that 4-2-1 exhaust purchase. I recently read, on Oldskoolsuzuki I think, that the 4-2-1 is better for midrange power than the 4-1. Tuning is not my strong point so I don't really know what they (or even I) were talking about, but I'm a convert now. $25 bucks, aye? Hmmmmn.

Not to mention that Pan just filled me in on the fact that his ENTIRE titanium 4 into 2 into 1 system minus the exhaust can only weighs 4 pounds!
