    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1000E Knocking in topend

First as a new member - Hi everybody - I've had a 1980 GS1000E for about 4 years now and theres about 61000 miles on the clock. Last year I took the head and block off to fix oil leaks, had them both skimmed to clean head gasket joint faces up, glaze busted bores and re assembled, everthing OK till this weekend. At tickover every 15 to 20 seconds there is a loud knockin from the top end for about 5 seconds that dissapears when the motor is revved. I haved removed checked and reset camchain adjuster - it seems to adjust towards the end of its travel so perhaps a new chain is required - I was worried a valve was trying to mate with a piston but all the compressions are similar (around 110psi) and on the road it pulls like a train and sounds glorious. Any body any ideas.8-[

I will be watching this thread, too, as my wife's '82 850L does the same thing. Does not happen when first started (cold), but will do it after it warms a bit.

Carb sync is as perfect as my mercury gauges will get it.

I have been curious about it, but evidently it is not too much of a problem. We have put about 10,000 miles on it over the last two years and it is still running strong. \\:D/
 
You have probably got cam endfloat where the thrust rings on the cams hit against the cam bearing caps. My '79 850 has the problem big-time!

49er has come up with a fix for this and in a few weeks he will probably post a how-to feature on this website, I think.

I have just returned from a week's vacation in Rarotonga. Some people get all the bad breaks!!

I plan to start on the "end float cure stickey" this coming week. The new digital pics are a big impovement on those early pics.
