Hi all, been lurking around here for the past 6 months or so while working on my GS. It now seems i have reached a dead end. The starter clutch has been making some ugly noises and slipping i'd say about 75% of the time, sounding like i just nedd to rebuild it. I took off the cover to see what i was up against, and i was suprised to see that it seems that all three springs and push pins have actually punched through the housing as you can see in the picture (which i hope uploads properly). This part, i have learned the hard way, is discontinued by suzuki. Does anyone know of anywhere i may still be able to get it? Or is it safe to weld those holes shut and rebuild it from there? Thanks.

I think this may be a common issue, but I have no experience with it.

Someone who does know will be by shortly, though.

That is undoubtedly the worst one that I have ever seen in over 30 years of working on these models. OUCH! Place an ad in the parts wanted section here and perhaps a forum member can sell you a much better one for a fair price.
Don't forget to buy all new springs, pins and rollers. Also, check the contact area on your crankshaft where the rollers make contact and resurface accordingly.

Thanks for the advice. I'll head on over there now and try to find one. In the event that i can't find one used though, would it be safe to weld? Or would the balancing be too precise for that?

Is it possible that a starter clutch assembly from another GS model or even another bike entirely would b work? If so, which? I'm really in a bind here.

Hi.

I have the whole left side from a GS1100. Clutch included. Can be sold separately ;).

You can go on a website like "http://www.partsoutlaw.com". NOT a recommendation but I use their fiches.

Find the fiche with your part then get the part no. Go back to the first page and do a lookup of the part-no. Then click on "where used". You will get a listing of compatible bikes. ;)

I just did that for my clutch assembly and got:

Parts Search Results
Assemblies where 12600-49850 is used
1982 GS1100G - STARTER CLUTCH
1982 GS1100GK - STARTER CLUTCH
1982 GS1100GL - STARTER CLUTCH
1983 GS1100G - STARTER CLUTCH
1983 GS1100GK - STARTER CLUTCH
1983 GS1100GL - STARTER CLUTCH
1984 GKE (GS1100) - STARTER CLUTCH

Your bike isn't listed but that could be anything like the difference in a shim in the set.

If you can give me some measurements I can get you pics and measure myself.

Highway_Glider man i wish i saw your posts about ten minutes earlier! i just found and ordered a whole crankshaft with everything on it off of ebay. ah well at least now i'll have some more spare parts laying around!

Oops.

It took me 10 minutes to type that.

I hope it was cheap enough.

If my part shoud have been the same. I would have sold and shiped it it for $70 or so.

be aware that you may have a bastard size S/C...i have came across these before on 80 and up 1000 8 valve engines.

The 1100 Starter clutch won't fit. the crank is larger diameter on the 1100 than it is on the 1000. I recently purchased a 1000G starter clutch. I'm sorry that they are discontinued, as it seems like a common area for failure.

What do you mean by that? Did they use more than one size during production? because it definitely does not look like the bike was ever opened up in fact that picture i posted may be the first time the insides have seen daylight since it was being built

yeah it did seem quite silly that they ended production. i did make sure the parts i got were from a GS1000 though, is there a difference between GS1000 and GS1000G parts? i thought i remembered hearing the internals were the same. ah well i"ll find out when the parts come this week

What's wrong with Parts Outlaw? :-k

They are about the friendliest to deal with and are second-best on prices.
(The ones with the best prices are jerks to deal with, so we don't use them any more.)

I have found Alpha Sports to have good fiche and a very good cross-reference (but it's not easy to find).
Don't use them for buying any parts, though, they are the highest-priced vendor around.

Nothing.

Nothing bad was implied.

bastard as in nothing else will interchange....you must buy exactly what you have/year/make/model.
this makes finding a good used S/C near impossible.

well the one i ordered is from a 1980 GS1000, so that should fit, right?

Part Shark didn't call it discontinued. Are you certain that it is NLA?

it was listed in stock on suzuki parts house (babbitt's), so i ordered it and a few days later the order was cancelled. when i called them to ask why, they said they were discontinued and the change hadn't been reflected on the site yet
