    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1000G Torque Spefications

My GS is near enough complete, after 6 long months of restoring it.
The manual states that the head torque settings are:- 27.0 ft lbs and the 2 out bolts are:- 6.5ft lbs.
The engine has been completely rebuilt and both gasket facing sides of head/barrels been bead blasted, I had the head and barrels checked at a machine shop and were completely true, (straight)
My question is, it is near enough run in now, and was wondering whats the highest amount (safely) can I go upto in ft.lbs as I know the GS range is prone to head gasket leaks.
I dont want to go crazy, like some people do. just enough as not bust out the head.
It has all new upper nuts and washers, including the 4 copper washers on the outers.
And, should the engine be warm or cold when torqueing it up.
Compression is 170-175 across the board.

You shouldn't need to go any higher than the recomended 27 ft lbs. if everything went together nice and clean. I retorqued mine after 200 miles and was amazed at how they all needed to be tightened up again. I checked again at 500 miles and they were all fine. Torque figures are for a cold engine as far as I know, but if I'm wrong someone will soon tell you.

Engine cold, also when torquing, as I learned in aviation, torque the bolts in the pattern and torque called for in the manual, wait 5 min and repeat as many times as nessary, till no more movement on any of the bolts(or nuts) is noticed, this has served me well on my bikes, you DO NOT NEED to increase the torque more than called for in the manual, I did this on my head gasket change 10 years ago on my GS1000G, and nary a leak
