A little update on the $400 GS1000 with the bad carbs.
Installed the carbs and one float bowl leaked. I have to fire my mechanic. He left two bowl screws loose. That's what happens when I...I mean he does things while at work.
Fixed that, hooked up the fuel line...no leaks, and hit the starter...it took a while but it finally fired. Didn't sound right...not bad, just not right. Wouldn't run without the choke, then as it got the pipes hot, it started smoking badly. Then oil started coming from the pipe/muffler joint. Shut down and let it cool, the started it again. Same thing. Shut down, pulled plugs, all looked good. Checked gaps.....040??? (The PO said he just replaced them) Regapped to .025 and then checked compression. 120, 85, 90, 125. No wonder it doesn't sound right.
This thing sat for a long time with a bad petcock and leaky float needles and filled the crankcase, so I think the rings are gummed up. Squirted some Kroil into the cylinders and waited a while, rechecked. 125, 90, 95 and 145. Better! Refired and still wouldn't run w/o the choke, but less smoke and no oil out the pipe.
Checked compression and it was 120, 90, 90, 125.
So, it is sitting with Kroil in the cylinders again, Friday I am putting some Seafoam in the cylinders and spinning the engine by hand and then refilling, letting it sit for a few hours, then running another compression check. If I can't get the rings unstuck, well, looks like I'll be replacing rings.
Not what I hoped for, but it does run with no abnormal noises..and the carbs don't leak!
Keeping fingers crossed....

Check your valve clearances. It is an oft-neglected item which can cause poor compression due to the valves not closing completely, and can make it pretty well impossible to carb tune properly, and makes them hard to start. My 1979 GS 1000 read 120, 110, 105, and 115 cold compression when I first got it, and all the valves were extremely tight. After setting valve clearances, they're all between 140 and 150 cold. Set your ignition timing as well. Rough in the fuel and air screws and then do a bench sync, then vacuum sync on the bike and running.

Check those valves as noted and RIDE! Use lots of throttle to load the rings. Seafoam in the tank, or Marvels Mystery Oil, will help loosen up the rings. Don’t worry about the compression until you have several tanks of gas through the engine – it takes time.

Good luck.

Supposedly the PO adjusted the valves, but...maybe I want to check them seing as how the plugs were gapped at .040.....
Plus my carb guru, who is a GS850 and RG500 road racer from way back axed if I pulled the atomiser tubes....I said no, but everything else.
He said they are what is causing it to run on choke only.
No big deal, I was thinking about taking them off and checking to make sure all the jets, etc stayed tight anyway.

Yeah, I'm remaining patient on the compression for now, once it runs and idles then I can run som treated gas through it and Seafoam the oil, too, plus change the oil a few times to get all the crud out of it.

Won't take but a few minutes to check the valves...wait, that's on the Guzzis...no shims....easy to get to....shops won't be open Friday and I have to work Saturday...rats!
