    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Got a problem with my 1982 Kat...I've searched all the archives and haven't seen it mentioned. Here's the deal. About a month ago when I engaged the starter it would spin just not rotate the engine. Opened up the cover and as I expected, the rotor had come loose from the tapered crank end. No big deal.... I removed starter clutch for inspection..looked great as well as all gears looked great. Reinstalled everything. Now when I start to put some serious torque on rotor nut (I have torque wrench), the starter gear behind the clutch tightens down and becomes one with the clutch. Shouldn't this gear free wheel easily in one direction when this nut is torqued??? Seems like the clutch is sliding too far up the taper and contacting the gear. Anybody ever have this problem...and what did they do to correct it??? Maybe some shims on the taper...it does have some wear mark's.. Bike was running great until this happened..... Thanks, Tom
 
The rotor and the starter clutch become one with the three small bolts that hold the two parts together. The starter clutch fits over the driving cog which is what the starter clutch fit's to.
When you do the main nut up the whole thing becomes part of the crank and goes round with the crankshaft. When the engine fires the starter clutch disengages, then the cog will become free while the crankshaft spins with the running engine.
There's not a lot of gap between the starter clutch unit and the starter gear.

When turning the motor backwards (tightening the nut) the starter clutch will engage the starter gear. When turning the motor in the normal direction, the gear should freewheel. Turn the gear by hand, it should lock up when turning one direction and turn freely the other way. Sounds to me like its OK.......Billy
 
Thanks for the quick replies. I still think something wrong though. The starter gear will spin in one direction fine untill I start putting some serious torque on the nut, then it stops spinning and is tight. Also when the engine runs the starter stays engaged. Thanks, Tom
 
I personally would like to know how you fixed it. It might help someone else in the future.
