So I picked up this 1983 GS1100ED project a few weeks back and I'm bumping around the idea of doing an ES clone. Anyone ever done it? Couldn't find anything in a search. Trying to figure out what would be needed. So far I've figured I would need:

-Fairing
-Square Headlight
-Instrument cluster

I'm sure there are plenty of other differences just not sure what they are. Any help would be appreciated. Josh?

You'll need the fairing stay, and to weld some bosses for the fairing to the frame. I can take some pics if you like to show you. It wouldnt be hard to duplicate. Hunting the headlamp and the gauge cluster will be a trick. A 700/750ES headlamp will work, but the old lunchbox lights ARENT the same. Airtech makes a replica fiberglass fairing, but dont sell the bracket. I have a bracket i just picked up off of ebay if you find it hard to find. Windscreens are available on ebay for 100 too. Other than that, and the gauges (which are different from the 700/750 guages slightly) its pretty much the same. The brochure i think boasts a bit of cam timing difference, but i dunno how true that is.

MY ES is going back to bone stock, total restoration this winter (except it will have a 150tire on an 1150 wheel:dancing:) I just need a complete airbox, if anyone has one. I might even consider trading my pods for one..

If you need any info or pics of anything in the fairing, let me know bro!

I was under the impression that the GS750ES stuff and the GS1100 frame were already compatible as far as bolting the fairing stay on.

Someone else confirm that .. if so I have a front clip from a 1983 GS750ES complete (light, frame, cover, foggy windshield) except for the small lower covers (over the cylinder head).

Fair shape but would need some work.

Let me know if you are interested.

They may be.. you could take a look at your bike and tell us. Its just a little bracket behind the steering mast with a bolt hole on each side, and then one on each side of the frame below and ahead of the tank..

The headlamp assbly and the frame and the gauges would be the hardest parts to find...as i said, there is a guy making repro windshields and Airtech is making the fairing...the only part of the fairing they DONT make are the lil knee fairings, but you see them on the bay from time to time. Finding a perfect set might be a challenge. There was one on there not too long ago..i decided i wouldnt spend more than 100 on em..they went for 110...OF course.. There is ONE SIDE on ebay right now, painted dark blue, for 10 bucks...doesnt show if it has all the tabs or not..

Josh, I think the ED already has all of the bosses that are required for the ESD fairing

Like I said, it may, ive never looked to see. If it does, you're good to go! Just need to track down the parts..

I have the entire assy except the knee fairings.
Yeah we gotcha, i was just saying if he wanted NEW, ready for paint, that airtech sells it, and its fiberglass, which would be lighter than the ABS.. not steppin on your sale bro ;)

K .. the windshield on this one is not much to look at tho

Oh yeah, one thing i DID forget, you'd have to change the wiring harness to accept the new dash. THAT might be another snag. The ES harness IS NOT available, but the ED still is (thanks for the info Pos) So, you'd have to do something about wiring it up once you found one.

$100 for a brand spankin replica...I am gettin one myself after the WV rally...this time next year, my dear Essie will be relegated to "Parade" duty, and be good as new. Hopefully i will have a B12 to go thrash instead of beating on my old girl..

Yeah not worried about having to paint. Whole thing would have to be painted anyway.

Don't know if you saw the post earlier; fairing and headlight on the 'bay right now:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzu...id=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65:12|39:1|72:1171

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/83-S...s?hash=item4ce7d7958e&_trksid=p4506.m20.l1116

Could just leave the original cluster on there if it would work with the fairing.

OK. So either rig it up somehow or find a very hard to find harness. Were the 750ES and 1100ES gauges the same?

No. Close, but not exact. The 1100 had more "dummy" lights. I do believe it had the information pannel controler, where the 750s did not. I can take a pic of the different two, i have both sitting at home. It may be one of those things where its close enough it doesnt matter, since you have to wire the harness up yourself anyway.

BTW, if you come across any 1100 body pannels or tail cowl with tabs intact youd like to unload, let me know. I plan on buying new this winter for my ES's resto, since its getting partially painted anyway, but if i can find some before that would be helpfull, and maybe a bit cheaper...

Will do Josh. I may end up parting this thing out, and if I do I will let you know. Side panels have broken tabs however. Just bumping ideas around; should really sell it (either running with the '82 1100 engine currently in the Katana) or part it out. Could really use the money to fund the Katana build but the thought of doing the clone is really intruiging, esp. since I got it cheap. Just don't know if another project is the smartest thing right now
