GS1100ES Revs rising

Hi All,
So I got the big GS running with just fresh fuel and a new battery. It starts and revs ok and sounds pretty mechanically quiet.
Unfortunately as it warms and comes off the choke the revs slowly rise to about 4000rpm.
I'm going to do a full carb strip and clean a some point but i'm just being lazy for now as I want to ride it briefly to check the gears etc.
The throttle and choke cables are free and no sudden rev rises when I sprayed the intake rubbers with brake cleaner so I don't think its an air leak.
I'm new to these bikes so anything else obvious to check?

4000 rpm ???
i'd start with the easy checks : see if the idle screw has any effect, check air/fuel screws and fuel height.
No leaks in the vacuum hose between tank and carbs ?
No leakage due to sticky floats ?
Check all 4 spark plugs.

Yes, it starts at a 1500rpm idle and slowly keeps rising. actually seems to top out at 4500rpm!
doesnt seem to be charging either but I guess thats another issue

Thanks Nessism, I have pulled the carbs now. The inlet rubbers look to be in good condition. I read the Newbie Mistakes Thread and there isn't any o-rings on my model is there?
There was a lot of fuel inlet side of the carbs but that could have been me trying to maneuver them out.

carb side of the inlet rubber good, engine side not so much!

For things like that, I like to cut a thin strip of green scotchbrite pad, douse it with WD-40, and rub that corrosion out, scrubbing it around the ports with your finger. Wont take much to clean it up.
