A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The battery light came on sometime this summer on my abused and much-jury-rigged Suzuki. The idiot lights have been sporadic anyway, but just in case, I followed the recommendations in the Stator Papers and ran the trouble-shooting tests.
The stator is good, and the rectifier passes the diode test. I'm chasing the wiring to ensure good connections (and ran my RR ground directly to the battery Neg)
The puzzling part is that my voltage at idle is 14.2, and drops gradually to about 12.9 at 5K RPM. Any ideas why?

Hi,

Check the voltage loss between the r/r output and the positive battery terminal. It should be 0.2v or less at 4000 rpm, the smaller the better.

This is usually caused by corroded connections between the r/r output and the battery, through the fuse box and other connections. Make sure all of the frame/ground connections are clean too. See the electrical section of my website for lots of tips and procedures.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I dont know the ESes, but is the battery light related to one of those probes into the battery?
If so, I thought I saw some comments about that being more related to fluid level in that cell, and not so much the battery voltage.

.

Thanks for the help, guys. my battery levels are OK. I ran the test suggested and got .38 volts at idle and about .14 at 4000 RPM. Basscliff said to run that test at 4000 RPM, but I noticed the Stator Papers IV said to do it at idle. Not sure if my readings indicate a healthy circuit or not.

The stator is good

What are the results of your stator test to make you think its good ?

Are all the wire connections good, clean and solid ? If you got 50vac on all legs of the stator Id say your RR is shot.

Bonanzadave, the stator voltage was low 70's at 5K RPM on all three circuits. I'll double-check my connections. I don't know bupkis about RR's but intuitively I assumed that internal failure would be total, on at least one diode. This incremental voltage shortfall does seem to point to general harness condition. I'll look at the RR again. Thanks for the input!

Best
Dirk
