A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I have just been reading about the issues people have with the hub drives on these old Suzukis. Mine is an '82 GS1100G, although the Service Manual Supplement that came with my bike indicates that it might be an 83.

I have removed the rear wheel once already and the gearing or at least the teeth that mesh with the rear wheel that are visible looked in pretty good shape. Which is the part that I should check? I will be dismantling the bike again shortly to refinish the frame so will check it all out and replace anything that needs it. Which bits do I need to be wary of?

Thanks guys!

The driven spline in the rear wheel is the weak link. Inspect carefully and lube with special Honda Moly 60 grease. No other commonly available grease is as good for that application.

Good luck

Thanks! So is it the piece in the rear wheel that engages with the drive shaft? The bit you can see when you take the wheel off? Mine looks pretty good. I guess it couldn't hurt to have a spare. Where would I get one? I checked Bike Bandit and it says "discontinued" there.

Be careful with a quick visual inspection.

The teeth do not fully engage each other. The edge that you can see, and appears to be perfect might be all that's perfect. Go back, about 1/8" deep into the wheel, THAT is where the wear occurs. If there is no grease in there, you can probably see it. If there is grease, you might be able to check them with a bent piece of fine wire. The BEST way to check is to remove the retainers and take the splines out of the hub. That is also the best way to apply the Moly 60.

.

Ok I will check it out. Thank you very much. And I went back and found the part at Bike Bandit - I was looking at the final drive section but it's on the rear wheel section. It's about $158.

Mate you are on fire tonight! (that means you are coming up with the goods...) I might just get that! It's weird - even though the old bugger keeps throwing up challenge after challenge I am really enjoying working on this bike. I really think it will end up a great ride after all this.

I sent a spline to another member down there that I probably should have kept for myself as it looked like it was NOS!:

At least I still have a couple of spares for my scooters left but,
I doubt that they are in as good of condition. :(

This was mine, don't know the milage but as you can see it was a gold (bad) one. I have a new late part # spare if you need one.

Cheers

I don't think mine was gold. Think I'd remember if it was. But you never know! The bike will be coming apart very soon so I will check. I doubt that getting stuck with a broken spline would be fun. I tend to be a bit splineless.
