I've searched for this and can't find anyone else with this problem. I bought this bike a little over a year ago. I've been just trying to get it back to stock form and running condition. One issue I'm wanting to fix is the way the seat is attached (or rather NOT attached). The seat is held in place by the front little bar that you slide forward into the channels on the frame, and nothing else. I have looked the seat pan over (assuming a piece was broken off or something) but see no evidence of any other latch or hinge or any mechanism. Are these 1100g's made this way, where you can just pick up the seat by the grab bar? Or am I missing something? It feels odd when I excelerate hard and I feel the seat shift back an inch or so...

Held in place by the bar in the front, AND the latch at rear.

Yes there shopuld be a keyed latch at the rear of the seat as Dale indicated..I can only assume you have the wrong seat.Post up some pics of the pan at the rear as well as the rear from the outside.. This will help decifer whats goingb on.

Thanks for the reply. I honestly can't see any place where a latch was ever attached. Could anyone post a pic? I've tried to find a pic on ebay without any luck.

Ok. I'll do that when I get home. The seat really fits clean and looks like the stock "G" model seat (comparing to pics of stock G model bikes). Of course all the pics have the seat ON the bike... also the "back" of the seat is hugged by the rear fender so no way to reach a keyed latch there (if it had one). Anyway I'll post up later.

This is the stock seat from my 82 1100 which i sold not long ago..there should be a keyhole in the rear of the seat to release it from the frame. I dont have a rear pic of the seat but this is basically what you should see if thats the stock seat.

This is not actually my bike but is identical in every way. My seat looks like this. The G seats are flatter that the L models for sure. I'll have to take pics of the bottom of my seat when I get home to confirm mine is in fact a stock seat.

Are you missing the tailpiece for your 1100G? The tailpiece has the lock in it. If the tailpiece on yours has been replaced, with one maybe from an 850G, there is no lock in it, as the lock for the 850G is on the frame on the side of the bike.

Is the key hole on the top surface of the tail piece? I have a hole there where Vetter wires were routed through but the hole is empty now that I removed my Vetter cases and Windjammer. About a 1 inch hole in the top surface on the tail piece. I always thought the hole was drilled by the genius who installed the vetter stuff on here. The wiring they did had me pulling my hair out...

The GS850G uses the same lock as the 1100

That's where the key cylinder is. I'll take a picture of it when I get home.

And to think I have thought about looking for a new tailpiece "without a hole drilled in it." Kind of funny I would've had a hell of a time finding one :dancing:

On my '81 850G, the lock is on the frame, not in the tailpiece, the seat is hinged to the frame member.

I agree, the empty hole is where the lock mechanism goes.

On an 81 the lock is on the frame. on an 82 it's in the tail piece. He has an 82 1100G

Thanks for posting that pic. Mine is missing the whole lock/latch mechanism. The p.o. apparently removed it to use the hole for routing wires to the vetter trunk. I have 2 threaded studs on the bottom rear of the seat pan. I guess this should have the bracket that the latch hooks too. I need a lock and bracket both. The p.o. also gutted my gas cap so it bounces around like the seat. Must've hated using keys.

Think?

Why don't you look up the seat at a parts supplier like bikebandit.com? They've got wonderful diagrams that will answer your question, and show all the parts you're missing.

I think I've figured out all I need now. I found the striker off ebay this morning for 6 bucks, but the locks are all pretty high priced. Except for one that comes without a key... I don't know if theres any way to disassemble those seat locks or to to re-key the lock. I'd rather get the lock with a key. People are selling sets of ignition/gas cap/helmet lock/seat locks which would be nice since they'd all use the same key. If anybody here had a seat lock for the right price I'd buy it. I imagine someone may have one with all the custom cafe looking seat jobs.
