well now, 82gs1100l shafite wont fire up.

new plugs, new fuel, carbs have fuel, bike has battery and spark, turns over just wont come to life, checked fuses and everything just no life..

kill switch is in run position, bike in neutral, everything i can think of is done and checked and i cant see any reason for it not to start up...

has anyone come across this phantom of not starting and been able to resolve it?? please... i want to fire it up take it for a spin before i pull it apart and build it up (which theres no point doing if it wont run)

im lost here

thanks in advance

ive done nothing,
picked it up, was running a few months ago (just over a year tbh) and been left to sit, so i pushed it home as the battery was dead, ive changed the fuel and plugs and charged up the battery.

so far ive checked the spark, pulled off drain screws from carbs to check for fuel, and checked all the fuses, all are how they are supposed to be.

The carbs, after sitting that long will have gummed up the pilot circuit. A strip and dip is the only real way to know that they are clean and operable.

Basscliff's site will have a how-to.

was afraid of that, have the how to's saved and ready to rock though. thanks

yeah choke without throttle and then tried it with and no difference, plugs are bone dry

If the plugs are "bone dry", it is safe to assume that the circuits in the carbs are not allowing fuel to flow through them.

Not sure what chemicals you have available over there to give them a good soaking, but it needs to be done.

Also be aware that you do not need to waste any money on "rebuild kits". Too often, they contain inferior parts, and not enough of what you do need. All that will be necessary will be o-rings (from cycleorings.com) and some bowl gaskets. When you order your o-rings, be sure to also get the ones for the intake boots.

While you are waiting for your carbs to soak (and your new o-rings), check the valve adjustment. Even with perfect carbs, if the valves are tight (especially the intakes), you will have a very hard time starting the bike.

.

awesome chief cheers. makes sense now why i got laughed at when i asked about a carb rebuild kit off one of the lads. he just laughed at me and said dont waste your money but didnt say why.

Did you prime the bowls?
i had, just finished cleaning them now, not even back on the bike yet. But were spotless inside. no blocks nothing, need new rings to put them back on the bike and a new tank feed line, other than that ive yet to check the clearance as already suggested, but its ****ing rain at the min so im done for now, till i get a roof up. keep suggestions coming if you can, doesnt seem the carbs were the issue :(

Hi Mick, yet another fellow irish rider on a Gs, that's a BIG 4 of us on the forum I know of LOL, id be very interested to know how you come by your Gs L. I ride an 82 Gs1100L shaftie and if the petcock/petrol tap on your bike is like mine and I suspect it may well be and if you havnt already, turn your petcock to prime, with full choke, No throttle and hit the starter to turn her over two or three times if she hasn't started return the petcock to reserve or on which ever you preferred and start your bike still with full choke and no throttle if she has already started return your petcock to your preferred position. Yip, worked for me and sure hope it does for you Mick, I be in stamullen and balbriggan occasionally what about we meet up some time us Gs riders. Guys/fellow members Suzuki in there great wisdom never exported/imported L models to this country or even close and I expect all were imported here s/h from the U.S. so they are quite rare.

as soon as i get it back together a meet up with a book of knowledge on them would be good, i came across it from the father in law. he had it about 12/13 years, then the shaft started having an issue, he welded it up and it went again so gave up on it, didnt have the time to repair it, so handed it off to me to see what magic i could throw at it. seen as id been ripping apart cars and bikes for the last few years on a trial and error basis and always coming out on top. but I suspect he knew this would be a handful for me as im more used to fuel injected modern stuff. but hey im in no hurry to botch it together, so will do it right, ive just bought new intake gaskets for it (as taking the carbs off initiated them falling apart in my hands), and spent about 30 seconds looking at taking the old ones off but the screws holding them on are a tad stuck so i drowned them in WD40 and walked away, will resoak them later tonight and try get them off without ruining the screws.

petcock was on prime the whole time i was trying to start it, with the choke sometimes on full others off, when off i tried with the throttle too, but nowt, ill get it, theres only so many things it can be, came on here hoping for a quick common reason, but seems to be the same, hit and miss lol..

this has been slow due to work and weather and well working on it outdoors too at the moment,

so stripped off the carbs again along with the intake boots to find the o-rings that looked ok when going on were all split when getting back to them now, so suspicion has it that they are the cause of the starting issue im having. so ordered a new set of them a carb jet cleaner and new screws for the entire carb set up, so when they turn up itll go back together hopefully for the last time before being modified how i want it to be.

so might as well get ahead of myself and ask, does anyone run pod filters and straight pipes on a carb set up and what do i need to do with the jets to get the fueling right when running that sort of setup? (im more used to working with injection lol)
