GS1150 Tranny in my 1100

I got my 1150 transmission yesterday in the mail!!! As some of you guys know, I recently did a complete bike overhaul and rebuilt the engine. When I was inspecting the transmission, I found that two gears had pitting on the teeth. Fortunately, I had a transmission from the bottom end I received from Mark (Shaftzuki). It was a very nice transmission with back-cut dogs and I figured it would be great in the 1100. I put it in and when I finally got to take the first ride it was sweet!!!! I went up through the gears and it shifted VERY smoothly and was a dream! BUT (notice a very large but) it was a pain down shifting. Hmmmmm, drag bike transmission, made to go up through the gears, hmmmmm.

Well, I've been riding it but modified my riding technique when it come to slowing down. I don't down shift much and just work around the ornery transmission.

What I plan to do is replace the transmission without tearing down the top end. I'm going to pull the motor, remove all the bolts that hold the cases together and pull the bottom case off. Then I can access the transmission and change it. It's kind of like doing heart surgery through the rectum. 8O

I know that they do a road race version of this cut where they cut both sides of the dogs but I doubt that would help your problem. Maybe whom ever cut the transmission put too much of an angle on the dogs making them hard to disengage. Of course if you had a clutch dragging it would cause this problem as well. I know Barnett plates are know for getting hot and dragging. Maybe try some clutch adjustment before you take the motor back apart. Mike J

This is off the subject of doing tranny work, but how do you manage removing and and installing an 1100 engine by your self? I pulled one and it was a drawn out affair with platforms, blocks, wedges, and walking the engine. There isnt any way I can just pick the thing up and lift it out of the bike.

That's what I'm going to do when the track is closed for winter. Heck I'm even going to leave the carbs on too. Drain the oil and fuel out of the engine, yank it out and flip it over and let the heads assy hold it up at an angle. I got a race cut tranny that is going in too and it will take less than a day to pull the motor R/R tranny and re-install engine.

Youre going to just reach over and yank that engine out, and flip it over with your hands? :-) Just how big are you? Sheesh. LOL

6' at 220lbs. Before I got married the girls would call me Superman, now she say's the other S word.

I got a Ford 460 block in the shed, pick that thing up a time or two and anything feels light.

So I guess youre know as Mr. S---head around the house huh? LOL

Having meet Hap in person I can safely say his Mom made sure he ate his vegitables and took his flinstone vitamins every day growing up.
that and having to fend off all those hormone crazed boys coming over to ATTEMPT to take Lindsy out is a real good work out!

I pulled the engine out of my 750 this afternoon. After messing around with jacks. blocks, wedges and shoving, grunting and cursing, I said to hell with it. Cranked up the table saw, grabbed some 2 x 4's, bolted together a 6' tall "A" frame, hung my electric winch from the crosspiece with a bit of chain and just pressed a button to lift the engine out of the bike. Didnt bother my back at all. Hardly raised a sweat. :-) :-)

Hap this is the way to do it !!! be sure to remove the breather cover though, as it is the point the engine weight will rest on and may snap off. Did you get new gearbox bearings?
Earl the 1100 and 1150 motors are a snap to remove single handed, afterall they only weigh 87kg, I removed and installed my Katana motor several times single handed. Then again I am 6'3" and weigh 200lbs.

Mike, that was something I looked at. I use the Suzuki OEM plates but thought that might still have something to do with it. I messed with it a while, going from having to hold the brakes when I'm in gear with the clutch pulled all the way in to massive clutch slippage when I applied any kind of throttle...I even pulled the clutch assembly to see if I had the shifter linkage aligned correctly. I'm afraid that it's the severe backcut on the dogs...

My R+D race cut tranny downshifts fine. As far as pulling the engine. Last time I had mine out I took the head, block, and pistons off first. Then I had my sister come over. If you guys live close maybe I could send her over. Oops it's getting late. I gotta go racing. Gonna take the street bike out today.

Dink, 87 kg is well beyond what I weigh. LOL :-) :-)

I'm 5'8" and 210 lbs of pure muscle! All I do is remove the header, pull the carbs, disconnect the electronics, remove all the motor mount bolts, and pull the engine out!

Kind of like Steve martin's "How To Be a Millionaire and Never Pay Taxes"...first, get a million dollars...

Hap

So Hap, what you're telling me is without a nametag, I wouldnt be able to see the difference between you and the Green Hulk. LOL :-) :-)
It must be nice to be able to simply reach over and pick up an 1100. :-)
Since I compressed two disks in my back, I dont risk it anymore.

One thing I do notice about removing the engine from the 750. It makes it sooooooooooo easy to put on the centerstand. :-) :-) :-)

Hap, let me know if you want to get rid of the trans. I can use it on my GS 1100 drag bike. Mike J
