    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS450: Can I remove the 'cross-pipe' in exhaust system?

Hi,

I am in the process of recycling an old GS450 into a cafe racer, and am going to replace the original mufflers with a couple of simple slip-ons. Tuning issues aside for the moment, I was wondering where to chop the exhaust at? Can I removed the pipe that links the two sides together under the sump, or does that serve an important purpose and shouldn't be messed with?

You would be MUCH better off if you cut off the cross-piece and left the rest of the mufflers intact. :-\\\

You won't gain much power by doing any of the mods you are suggesting, only change the sound. If you cut the pipes and change the mufflers, get ready for jetting headaches. Just losing the cross-piece should not involve any of that.

I'd do it after the balance pipe... but if it's as rusty as mine was you'll probably find the balance pipe doesn't want to separate when you take it off the bike.

The balance pipe is supposed to separate in the centre, so if you can get it separated like that then hang onto it.
 
If you stop using the stock exhaust system, sell the stock one on this forum.
 
The H-pipe helps to balance exhaust pulses from each cylinder and helps scavenge exhaust as well. Lots of V8 car owners pay good money to add H and X pipes to their vehicles for this reason. I would keep the cross-over.
 
Keep the cross pipe for sure.

And what is wrong with the stock mufflers? I think they look nice.. are yours all rusted out? You did say you are recycling this bike
