    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS450/GS250 picture & airbox measurement request

Ok, to be brief, I need to know if the airbox from a GS250/450 (1980-1982 only) will fit with my 1978 GS400 frame and battery location. Why? I have a GSX400 motor that uses the 250/450 airbox, but I dont know if it'll fit with my battery location.

I would like A) measurements of the length & width of the airbox (tell me where you measured from, too)

and B) pictures of the airbox & battery mounting on a stock GS250/GS450.

From this I can devise a plan as far as battery relocation..
 
Okay better yet, can someone give me an outer and inner diameter of the output cylinders that you attach the boots to?

Not of the carbs, but of the airbox.

Turns out I might be able to buy those boots, IF they fit the airbox on a 1978 GS400.

Edit: Pictures of the way those boots mount up to the airbox would be great too.

That picture is not one of an 80-82 GS450E airbox. It says it's from an 82-83 GS450GAD. bikebandit.com has fiches for all GS400, 425 and 450 bikes so you might see what you need there. The measurements you ask for are impossible to obtain without some major disassembly, or unless you have spare parts lying around. I might have one spare airbox boot but would have to dig and am working this weekend so won't have time. For whatever it's worth, my 1980 GS450ST has the 34mm Mikuni carbs. I think B34SS is the part number. 34mm is the I.D of the cylinder side not the airbox side.

Once in a while you'll find an airbox cheap on eBay, maybe not so often recently.

Hey, BriyenKeith on this forum just finished his GS400 bobber and may have the orig. airbox kicking around. Might be worth a shot.

Thanks for responding Ian.

It finally sank into my brain that Mr. MrZig is replacing his GS400 motor (2 valves per cylinder) with a GSX400 motor (4 valves per cylinder). Hence the discrepancies with the airbox. Those angled boots from the 450GA look like they could make up the difference between the spacing of the GSX400 carb rack and the GS400 airbox. It's tough to say precisely without measurements, but I think they look promising.

Exactly. My bike and airbox are from a 1978 GS400. My engine and carbs are from a 1980 GSX400.

The airbox I showed above is from a 1983, yes, but the boots are what I'm interested in.

I want to know if the boots in that picture will fit into/onto my airbox.

So the pictures/measurements are of the boots on the GS450/GS250/GSX400 since they share the same intake setup.

Hi,

Researching some parts fiches and on http://www.suzukicycles.org , it seems that both bikes came outfitted with Mikuni BS34SS carbs. Those boots just might work.

They look similiar. Not identical, but similiar. Suzukicycles says it's a BS34, however they also say the GSX400 has a BS34.

I don't know. My brain is going insane from all the differnt options and bikes and carburetors I've been looking at. I need sleep and tomorrow I'm going to order the boots from my dealer. If they fit great if they don't, I'll return them and figure it out.
 
suzukicycles.org shows an '86 GSX400 as having BS34 carbs. Those bikes look unchanged from '80 to '86.

Since the carbs are off the bike it's a simple matter to measure them and if they are 34mm the offset airbox boots should do the trick. Even if the carbs are 32 mm it might be necessary to use those boots anyway and make a spacer somehow to increase the O.D to fit.

The interesting part is, why are the carbs closer together on an 8-valve motor?? Why didn't they just keep it simple? The bikes are all so similar and yet slightly different. Of course we are talking about a nine year span of time.

In Canada the GSX400E was sold as a GS400E, I should know, I have one :)

Almost all the body and frame type stuff APPEARS to be the same as the 83+ GS450

same airbox it seems too. I actually think most of the motor is the same too, just a different bore size and head?

So if it is the same for the 83+ it might be the same for the 80-82?
 
Also from what I have read the 8v gs/gsx400 motor is the same from below the head as a 450E motor, and possible the 89+ gs500

I have this motor, and rebuilt the carbs, the boots angle out enough to fit that box if my brain-estimometer is working right.
 
It sure is hard to find parts for it, isn't it?

I ordered the flexy boots and I'm just waiting for them to come in. We'll see if they fit.

Do you have MSN? I notice you're from Vancouver Island. I'm from Enderby (hour North of Kelowna)
 
like ian said I do have a stock air box lying around if you want it. I'd need to weld the electrics mounts back on but no bigge. Pm if you want it should have the boots as well.

What exact model/year bike is it from?
 
i will get you pics of my 450 air box tomorrow and post it for you to see.
