    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS450E Air Filter Installation

I bought an 81 GS450E and it was missing the air filter and the little plastic mesh part that goes along with it. Parts 2 and 3.

I ordered a new air filter and didn't order the bracket (3). The air filter pictured seems to have something around the bottom edge, possibly to give it stability, but mine is just plain foam. It is the OEM part listed.

Can someone explain how this all goes back together? Does the plastic bracket go on top like in the picture, if so, what supports the filter from the bottom? Maybe the rim around the bottom in the picture that I don't have? Perhaps the plastic mesh goes on the bottom? I'm curious how this all goes back together. I plan to fabricate the plastic mesh part out of something from home depot.
 
On my 450 there was a plastic grate piece that the filter sat on top of. It looked to be sealed inside the box - I don't think you could get it inside the opening on top. Not sure about part #3, like the bottom piece I don't see how you would get it inside the box.

on my 1980 gs450l the plastic mesh grate looking thing comes out of the airbox and sits on top of the airfilter you just have to bend that grate just a little and it comes out of the airbox atleast thats how mine is
 
On both GS450 bikes I've restored there were TWO plastic mesh things. One on bottom of the filter (black) and one on top (white). In fact, I don't see how you could keep the air filter from flopping around in the airbox without both of these.
And yes, they do pop in/out of the airbox by flexing them in the middle.

Yes, as the above post(s) say, in my 81 GS540L, there was a black bottom air filter grate, the air filter & the translucent plastic top grate. Bottom grate on mine had smaller holes (more support) than the top one. Created a sandwich for the air filter element.

I say "there was" because when I opened my air box I found the filter element contourted, many nut shells above & below the filter & grates AND the black plastic bottom one in a melty-twisty mess.

Found I could not order that bottom black grate (must be part of the airbox assembly?), so cut one out of an old laundry basket... Used the clear/translucent grate as a template (black one is a bit bigger)... Working fine.
